Familiar foes line up at Newcastle

Horse Racing Betting

There is Class 2 action from Newcastle on Wednesday in the 2.30 pm. This is a 5f furlong charge with seven starters lining up. There has been clear favouritism in the early markets towards Good Effort who was being taken as the 9/4 market leader* (betting odds taken from BetFred on January 7th, 2020 at 2:02 pm).

Will Good Effort land the Newcastle success?

The Irish challenger Good Effort is a pretty handy runner and has won three races in his career between 6f and 7f. So there’s a decent chance that he will be near the front in this shorter 5f trip. He did get a win in his last outing which was in December last year, taking a four-length success over Degrisement. That built on a second-place finish over course and distance in late November, Good Effort being beaten by half a length by Watchable.

Can Watchable get the better of Good Effort once again?

Being a course and distance winner as recently as late November will pique interest in Watchable. He followed up that win at Newcastle ahead of Good Effort by winning again on his next trip. That was a Class 2 effort at Lingfield Park at the 5f mark. He had a run out on January 2nd as well at Chelmsford where he misfired in finishing second from last. But that form at the back end of last year should leave him as a tempter at 11/2 odds* (betting odds taken from BetFred on January 7th, 2020 at 2:02 pm).

Lomu and Corinthia Night

Lomu brings form to the table as the six-year-old has won his last two races. He was 7/2 favourite in his last race which was at Wolverhampton in December. He duly delivered with a one-length victory over Royal Birth. That was his sixth victory at a distance between 5f and 7f. He will be a popular pick for punters in the race.

Corinthia Night was out in a conditions race at Wolverhampton on Boxing Day and settled for fourth. He never looked in the frame for success. He was out again in early January and again didn’t make an impact in a Class 2 race at Chelmsford. Back in December, he was 6th at Wolverhampton behind Lomu, Royal Birth and El Hombre. Corinthia Night has a top rating, but the form is questionable.

The rest of the pack

El Hombre was third behind Lomu at the aforementioned trip at Wolverhampton in December 2019. That was his last trip and had gone from a mark of 13-2. He has winning experience at a distance but looks as if he may find the going tough against familiar opposition again.

Royal Birth settled for third in his last outing, which was at Wolverhampton last December as well. The nine-year-old has plenty of experience but will have to raise his game here. Hareem Queen will come with form but the weights don’t look too favourable for her at 11/1 odds* (betting odds taken from BetFred on January 7th, 2020 at 2:02 pm). She has three straight place finishes, two of those wins, however.

Predictions

Good Effort’s win at Deauville recently showed the progression that he has. He looked good in that race and does look to be the one to beat at those 9/4 odds* (betting odds taken from BetFred on January 7th, 2020 at 2:02 pm). Hareem Queen does pique some interest with her form over the distance, but there is the issue of weights under the conditions and being among the higher class company. Lomu brings some hot form and really looks to be the biggest threat to the favourite.
