Newcastle 17:00: Boylesports offer 9/4 racing odds on Ballyare – 16th January 2020

Horse Racing Betting

There is good evening action from Newcastle on Thursday night. This is a Class 5 handicap fixture with seven runners line up. It’s a race in which the bookies are uncertain as well with joint-favouritism going towards Ballyare and Penmellyn.

So there could be a very good contest set for this one over a 7f distance. There’s a lot more depth in an excellent field however to size up with a couple of C&D winners in the mix. Read our Newcastle racing predictions for more.

Ballyare 9/4

Ballyare v Penmellyn

So if as a punter you are leaning towards what the bookies think then it’s Ballyare v Penmellyn. The rest of the field can be forgotten. So who gets the nod in a two-horse contest?

Castlehill Retreat
5/1

Coral

Ballyare has had four starts, placing once in those. He nearly delivered a win on his latest run in a December contest at the course in December. That was over a distance of a furlong shorter.

This just may be the extra distance that he needs to get a win under his belt because it was only a narrow miss last month. In that race Penmellyn finishing behind the runner up at the track.

She has been knocking on the door with back-to-back second-place finishes. Back in November, she was fourth in a Necklace contest won by Castlehill Retreat. At 9/4 joint favouritism, that’s a tough pick to split them* (betting odds taken from Boylesports on January 15th, 2020 at 3:52 pm)

C&D Winners

Castlehill Retreat, on the back of a win at the track in November, may have some appeal. Especially with a course and distance win under his belt. He was a beaten favourite last time out over a 6f distance, finishing seventh. That bucked some stronger form he seemed to be running into.

Venture Identity is another C&D winner in the fixture. She undid a lot of good progressive work in finishing last as a beaten favourite at Wolverhampton in her last outing, which was at this distance. Before that, she had nailed back-to-back wins at 7f, the second after a significant penalty.

The Other Contenders

Bold Suitor has had three trips and has yet to secure a place finish. She will have blinkers for the first time in this one. She goes into the race following a fifth place at Kempton last December. Sea Ewe is in the same boat with no place in three runs and on a crack at 6f at Newcastle last December was second from last. Secret Smile has earned one place from six previous starts. She took on a 1m challenge at Lingfield last time out and was second from last. She goes with blinkers for the first time.

Predictions

Ballyare is the pick for this one at 9/4 odds* (betting odds taken from Boylesports on January 15th, 2020 at 3:52 pm). He looks perfectly suited to going that extra furlong step-up from his last race. Given that Penmellyn has been beaten by both him and Castlehill Retreat, that is notable.

The latter is a good option to recover from that seventh place last time out because he is a C&D winner. As for the other, Ventura Destiny struggled with a weight raise last time out after improvement.
