Fendale heads up the field at Newcastle

There is a really competitive field going off in this one and 8 year old Fendale is leading the market. Each of his last five runs have been at either Class 2 or Class 3. In his last trip, which was over course and distance in early December, he was second in a Class 3 contest.

Fendale Outright

He pushed and challenge winner Brushwork extremely well in that one, and based on that performance, he has to be regarded here. He Looked more than comfortable back up at the 6f trip and was a 40/1 outsider in that contest. He’s at 11/4 for this one in contrast* (betting odds taken from Boylesports on January 22nd 2020 at 21:18)

Hart Stopper

7/2 shot Hart Stopper was a beaten favourite last time out* (betting odds taken from Boylesports on January 22nd 2020 at 21:18). He had to settle for second of ten. That was in a run at Kempton in early January when he was beaten out by a length by Los Camachos.

Is that a reason to write him off? Not really because he has won six times in his career at the 6f distance and has placed in each of his last four runs at the distance, a couple of those were in a higher class contests as well.

Will previous C&D winners appeal?

There are four courses and distance winners on the card. The first of those is Foolaad, an experience 9 year old who was the fourth of seven runners in his last trip. Really the form has not been there from him to suggest that he is going to spring a win.

Treacherous, last year’s winner of this contest, is another of the C&D runners in his race and has won six times between 6f and 7f. He was running along in some cracking form until he tanked at Ascot last outing. That was in May last year. He was in superb shape in early 2019 which includes his C&D victory. He’s a bigger 9/1 option* (betting odds taken from Boylesports on January 22nd 2020 at 21:18)

Athollblair Boy had a really poor run in his last trip, which was course and distance in October. He has won twice at C&D win, the most recent in January last year. Then there is Louis Treize who was third last time out over 5f. His C&D success was in 2018 and has run only three times since.

Others to note

Lorton has won twice at the distance, but her recent form isn’t showing much of anything and was 8th of 10 last time out. The four year old looks as if she needs more work.

Fuente took a fourth in his last run which was at Kempton earlier this month, behind second-placed Hart Stopper. Glorious Charmer’s last run was at Newcastle in December. He finished 9th of 11 as a 66/1 shot.

Predictions & Tips

Fendale’s near miss against Brushwork at a higher grade recently has to put him in very good standing for this contest. That was over course and distance so he makes for a pretty sound option.

There has to be a nod towards Hart Stopper as well who was a beaten favourite, but not by much, in his last contest. So that should pull him into consideration.
