Don’t Be Surprised

Trained by Seb Spencer, five-year-old Don’t Be Surprised is the favourite for this Newcastle trip. His last run was at course and distance and he ended up taking second place at 7/1.

That was in a field of ten, so it was a good effort.

His last four races have all been at Newcastle, and he has taken second place in two there in this calendar year.

So just the fact that he has gone close a couple of times already should put him in good stead as he looks for his first win. Don’t Be Surprised is the 9/4 favourite* (betting odds taken from Bet365 at 02:18 GMT on Thursday, 5th March 2020).

Zarkavon brings form

Zarkavon was a course and distance winner on her last run. She beat Rince Deireanach by one and a half lengths last month on that trip.

She had been the 2/1 favourite for that run and she is back as an 11/4 option* (betting odds taken from Bet365 at 02:18 GMT on Thursday, 5th March 2020).

So there are excellent claims here from Zarkavon who has won two of her last three runs and hasn’t been out of the places in any of her last four runs.

They have all been in big fields as well. Her official rating is up to five and she will be in cheekpieces for this one.

Rince Deireanach

Will Irish challenger Rince Deireanach be able to turn the tables on Zarkavon after their recent meeting? She was second to Zarkavon at course and distance last month and that had been her best effort for some time.

That was a marked improvement in her running really for the first time since April last year. The question marks are going to be over whether or not she can back it up and goes at 9/2* (betting odds taken from Bet365 at 02:18 GMT on Thursday, 5th March 2020)

Peruvian Summer can shine

The Kevin Frost-trained Peruvian Summer is the highest-rated runner in the field. He is bringing an unexposed touch with him because he hasn’t been out in action since May last year.

Peruvian Summer has won at 7f on fibresand before. Since his last win, which was at Southwell last year, he returns a 6lb mark higher.

Betty Grable

Another interesting entrant is Betty Grable who is a course and distance winner. She has actually claimed four wins from 1m to 1m 1f in her career, including on the all-weather.

She was second by just over a length at course and distance last month. So that will suggest that she may not be far away from place-contention.

Betty Grable goes as a very interesting 8/1 option* (betting odds taken from Bet365 at 02:18 GMT on Thursday, 5th March 2020).

Rest of the runners

Ayr Poet is among the lowest-rated runners in the field and has only had three starts, placing in none of them. Rebeljustfokicks has finished 7th in her last two races.

Dixieland gees 1lb out of the handicap and the four-year-old was last of 8 at Newcastle on a 7f trip last month.

Pearl Spectre was 9th of 11 at Chelmsford over a 1m distance last month but has won nine times between 6f and 1m. There’s Just no current form from the nine-year-old.

Predictions & Tips

The favourite in this one is well worth taking on and that will be with Zarkavon. She delivered superbly as a 2/1 favourite at course and distance last month, toppling at least one of the main contenders, Rince Deireanach.

Don’t Be Surprised has gone close at Newcastle, but has yet to deliver. His time won’t likely be far away, but Zarkavon, well she looks pretty versatile and can step it up and take the win.
