Newcastle United v Leicester City Betting Tips – EFL Cup, 28th August 19.45pm

Newcastle United and Leicester City meet at St James’ Park on Wednesday night for an all-Premier League EFL Cup second round tie. The Magpies may have shocked Tottenham Hotspur at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in the league last weekend, but Steve Bruce’s boys are the second favourites in this one. Leicester have been tipped to have a good season in the Premier League under Brendan Rodgers, but can they go far in the cup competitions? This should be a thrilling cup tie on Tyneside.

Newcastle United News and Form – Can the Magpies build on Sunday’s superb win at Spurs?

Newcastle United had made a poor start to their season, losing both of their opening two Premier League games under new boss Steve Bruce. The Magpies were beaten at home by Arsenal on the opening weekend of the Premier League season, with Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang scoring the only goal of the game.

Newcastle were then very poor at Carrow Road in their second match. United were second best all over the pitch, with Norwich City running out comfortable 3-1 winners. The Magpies were 3-0 down before Jonjo Shelvey pulled one back in injury time.

Newcastle were given no hope at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium last Sunday. However, Bruce’s boys put on a battling display in north London, stunning Spurs with a 1-0 win. Joelinton’s 27th-minute goal, which was his first for the club, won the points for Newcastle.

Staying in the Premier League must be United’s number one priority, but momentum is key in football, and Newcastle would love to make it back-to-back wins with victory over Leicester in the cup on Wednesday night.

Leicester City News and Form – Will the Foxes show their class at St James’?

Leicester City have looked very solid so far this season, starting their Premier League campaign with five points from a possible nine. The Foxes began with a hard-fought 0-0 home draw with Wolverhampton Wanderers at the King Power Stadium.

Leicester followed that draw up with a superb away point at Chelsea. In what was Frank Lampard’s first competitive game at Stamford Bridge, the Foxes fell behind to an early Mason Mount goal. However, City dug in at the Bridge, and Wilfried Ndidi equalised in the 67th minute. On another day, Leicester could have won in London.

Brendan Rodgers’ side picked up their first win of the campaign with three points at newly promoted Sheffield United last Saturday. It was a tough fixture for the Foxes, but goals from Jamie Vardy and Harvey Barnes were enough to give City a deserved 2-1 win at Bramall Lane. Ahead of this weekend’s clash with Bournemouth at the King Power Stadium, Leicester sit fourth on five points.

City head to St James’ as the slight favourites with the bookies. Having picked up a point at Stamford Bridge as well as three points at Bramall Lane in the league, can the Foxes claim an away win in the cup in midweek?

Newcastle United v Leicester City Predictions

Leicester City win: Newcastle had a fine victory at Tottenham last weekend. Ahead of that one, the Magpies were a 12/1 shot, but Bruce’s boys performed admirably and deserved their luck in London. However, Leicester looked really strong under Rodgers at the backend of last season, and the Foxes have kicked off this campaign in fine fettle. With that in mind, I’m backing the away side to sneak a narrow win at St James’ on Wednesday. Leicester are priced at 23/20.

Jamie Vardy has been a thorn in Newcastle’s side in recent years, scoring three times against them since the Foxes’ promotion back in 2014. Vardy opened up his account at Sheffield United last Saturday, and the former England international is priced at 6/5 to score anytime in this one.
