Newcastle News and Form

The drama never stops at Newcastle. Out goes Rafa Benitez to the disappointment of all Newcastle fans. It is a local lad Steve Bruce who has come into the hot seat. They aren’t a club who generally spends a lot of money, but they did break the club record to get striker Joelinton in the side. They need some firepower because Ayoze Perez and Salomon Rondon both have left the club. The Magpies also saw the return of Andy Carroll who was a free agent.

It will be imperative for Steve Bruce that Newcastle get off to a quick, strong start or else the home fans will turn against him. Under Benitez, Newcastle rallied to a 13th place finish in the league table and they posted a W8 D1 L10 record on home soil for the campaign. They were lacking goals, partly because of a lack of talent and partly because of conservative tactics.

Just 37% of Newcastle’s home games ended up over 2.5 goals. Of the ten losses which they had to endure at St James’ Park last season, seven of them were by one goal margin only. Newcastle netted the opening goal in just six of their home fixtures last season. A positive which they can take forward is that they won six of their last eight home fixtures of the previous campaign.

Arsenal News and Form

Arsenal have had a busy transfer market and not just selling. They have been buyers and they have needed to be. They lost their captain Laurent Koscielny, while they have added, among others, Dani Ceballos, David Luiz and Kieran Tierney, the latter two to add some defensive strengths. Their big signing though was for exciting attacking player Nicolas Pepe from Lille who could really shine in the EPL. The Gunners look better in attack than the defence on paper.

They collapsed at the end of the season be put still were only two points out of third place as they had to settle for fifth. They also got to the Europa League Final, so there should be plenty there for Unai Emery to build on. They should have an abundance of goals in them, but it will be about whether they can get the balance in defence right this season. They were extremely poor at the back in the last campaign. Of the top 9 finishers last season, only Man Utd conceded more than Arsenal did.

Arsenal’s away record last season was W7 D4 L8 and they lost three of their last four away from the Emirates. All but one of their eight away defeats last season happened within their final twelve road games. They averaged 1.6 goals per away game did the Gunners, with their defence shipping an average of 1.8 per game. They were just the one away from the clean sheet from them all season and both teams scored in 79% of Arsenal’s away games. They did open the scoring in 11 of their 19 road games.

Newcastle v Arsenal Predictions

Arsenal to win: It should be a win for the Gunners in this one, even though it may take some time for their defence to come together. But they boast plenty of attacking and scoring options and that is likely to get them over the line. Arsenal to win.
