Newcastle came up short away from home last weekend as they paid a visit to Stamford Bridge and lost 2-1 against Chelsea. That has left them with back-to-back defeats and they have failed take a win in any of their last five Premier League fixtures (D2 L3). Actually looking back at their form the Magpies have managed to take just the one win in their last nine Premier League fixtures now. That slump has seen them slip back to the relegation zone.

They haven’t had a lot to cheer about on home soil at St James’ Park. Newcastle’s record on home soil in the top flight this season is W2 D1 L8. Not helping their cause in this one is that they had to go through extra time in order to beat Blackburn in an FA Cup replay on Tuesday at Ewood Park. The Bluebirds earned a point in a 0-0 home draw with Huddersfield last weekend. Given their fight against relegation themselves that can be seen as points dropped by Cardiff. It could have largely been worse for the bluebirds because Huddersfield were denied a penalty. Anyway, Cardiff are now W1 D2 L1 in their last four top-flight fixtures so they are digging out the points and in their position, every point is so valuable.

Cardiff have only taken one away victory this season in the Premier League with them having produced a W1 D2 L7 record away from home. In that sequence of away games, Cardiff have managed only the six goals but they have averaged 1.8 goals per game against them on their travels. However, they have taken back-to-back clean sheets away from home two or three that they have managed this season. Draw: This one looks as if it is going to be too tight to call at the end of the day. Newcastle haven’t done enough on home soil, and it doesn’t really look as if the Bluebirds are going to be doing a lot else other than ensuring they avoid defeat. Draw.
