European Champions Cup Rugby Preview – 7.45 pm kick off

The pool action will conclude for both of these sides at Kingston Park with no hope of getting through to the next round of the competition. So from that perspective, this is a dead rubber. The only thing really at stake is a bit of pride and the desire to not end up finishing bottom. Newcastle will avoid the wooden spoon if they avoid defeat.

Newcastle v Toulon Preview

Both Newlcastle and Toulon have found the going too tough in Pool 5 of the Champions Cup. Newcastle have posted eight points from their five games so far and one of those two wins were against Toulon all the way back on the first round of action. Newcastle took a one-point victory at the Stade Mayol, largely thanks to the kicking accuracy of Joel Hodgson on the day who fired over five out of five.

The Pool situation looked even better for the Falcons on matchday two as a late converted try saw them grab a win over the powerful Montpellier side. But then three straight losses on the bounce has pushed the Falcons out of the qualification picture. They really needed to get something out of last weekend’s reverse fixture against Montpellier, but instead, the Falcons were crushed heavily in France.

Newcastle are the lowest scoring side in the group and only their opponents on the weekend, Toulon have conceded more. Of course, now given the situation that the two of these are in in the Pool, it’s unlikely that there is going to be a need to go full tilt at the game. The situation doesn’t require that from either of them really.

Toulon have only managed to put the one win on the board in their Pool stage campaign so far. That win was a surprising one as well as they picked up a winning bonus point at home in round three against Montpellier. That was a fantastic win from them, but they have been unable to come up with anything else of note. Last weekend they lost 17-28 at home against Edinburgh.

Newcastle v Toulon Prediction

Realistically the outcome doesn’t even matter in this one. Are either of them really going to be at full strength and full intensity for the match? Probably not and we are looking into the handicap market where a Toulon +10 is at 10/11 odds* (betting odds taken from Ladbrokes on January 17th, 2019 at 2:30 pm)
