Newcastle Wednesday 16:50: Betway offer 3/1 racing odds on Canford Bay – 19th February 2020

Plenty of options to oppose the favourite with in Newcastle trip

Horse Racing Betting

The final race of the afternoon from Newcastle is this class 3 handicap. There are seven starters lining up for this one, which is a quick blast of action over a 5f trip. The market has been pretty tight with Canford Bay just shading a bit of favouritism. But if the markets are right, this is going to be a competitive race.

Canford Bay set for a big challenge

Just shading things as the 3/1 favourite for this race* (betting odds taken from Betway on February 18th, 2020 at 19:14). There are claims for that of course and he is a course and distance winner. That happened back in September 2017 though so it’s not particularly relevant.

Canford Bay has has taken just one win since the middle of last year, a success at Wolverhampton in mid-January. He will get challenged as there is a very competitive field lining up here against him.

Tathmeen a keen contender

Another course and distance winner is Tathmeen. His C&D success was a lot more recent than that of Canford Bay’s. Tathmeen secured the 5f win at Newcastle earlier this month. He was back out in action at the same course over the weekend.

Tathmeen put in another good showing with a third place finish in a big field of 14 at a considerable weight hike which he dealt with very well. He should be right in the mix at 10/3* (betting odds taken from Betway on February 18th, 2020 at 19:14).

Fendale and Lavender

Four of the seven competitors in this race have won over course and distance. Fendale and Lavender are two of them. Fendale came back after a break to only finish 7th of 9 in a 6f trip at Newcastle in January. That was a far cry from an excellent early December second place at the track over the same distance at a higher class.

Alsvinder was third at Chelmsford in his last run. That was from a massive 40/1 SP as well. He has experience in the bag as a seven year old, winning ten races in his career from 5f to 6f. Seven of those have been on the all-weather as well. It was a sharp enough run from him to prime him up for this shorter trip. Fendale and Alsvinder are both at 4/1* (betting odds taken from Betway on February 18th, 2020 at 19:14).

The rest of the runners

Foxy Forever was sixth on his last run which was a 5f trip at Chelmsford back in January. He hasn’t won since June of last year anywhere and the 10 year old is likely to fall short again in this contest.

War Whisper is well out of form as well. This is his first outing since September last year where he was 7th at Pontefract. It has been a while since he was in a smaller field. In fact the last time he was one of seven in a contest he was second at Musselburgh in August last year.

Charming Kid returned to action at Lingfield over 6f last month. He was the last of the seven. He has been well beaten in his last three runs now finishing last in each of them. Charming Kid has claimed one distance win, but that was back in 2018.

Predictions & Tips

There should be a title battle in this one because there are three or four with some big claims.

Alsvinder is it who gets the nod as our pick for the race. He just brings that extra quality having been competing in higher class contests. Twelve months ago he was bang in form and could get his 2020 going with success in this one.

To back that up Tathmeen is going to face a tough challenge from a 75 mark and outright favourite Canford Bay just looked wholeheartedly disappointing last time out Wolverhampton.
