The Hurworth Bloodstock Coronation Cup is the first Group 1 race this year to be run in the UK.
It is normally staged at Epsom as a prelude to the Derby but Newmarket’s Rowley Mile course is its home for one year only.

Coronation Cup History
This is the first middle-distance race of the year in the QIPCO British Champions Series. The Coronation Cup is always the first stopping point for some of the country’s best older horses (the race is restricted four-year-olds and upwards).
The Group 1 event is contested over 1m4f and dates back to 1902 when it was staged to celebrate King Edward VII’s coronation.
Its a favourite target for former Derby and Oaks winners, though the Epsom connection has been lost this year. Aidan O’Brien is has won it eight times and has last year’s Derby hero Anthony Van Dyck entered this year.

Ghaiyyath aims to conclusively prove his stamina
Ghaiyyath won the Group 1 Preiss von Baden in Germany last year, his first try over 1m4f. He was later disappointing in the Arc at Longchamp but was impressive again at Meydan earlier this year, though that was over 1m2f.
There is no doubt that the Godolphin entire is a very smart performer but bookmakers are really giving nothing away with best odds of 6/4.
Newmarket is a stiff course and races are almost always run at a strong gallop and there are more convincing stayers in this year’s race than William Buick’s mount, who could be found wanting when the tap is turned.
Champion stayer may get outpaced
Stradivarius had won 10 consecutive races at Group 1 or Group 2 level, including two Ascot Gold Cups, prior to losing out by a nose to Kew Gardens in last year’s Long Distance Cup.
He’s won the Yorkshire Cup over 1m6f at York on his reappearance in each of the last two seasons so fitness is unlikely to be an issue for John Gosden’s pocket-rocket but last raced over 1m4f more than three years ago when beaten in a Chester handicap. That has got to be a concern but Bet365 are offering 10/3 for his legion of devoted followers.
Varian grey could set for an encore
DEFOE won the Coronation Cup at Epsom 12 months ago, beating the classy Kew Gardens.
Given a confident ride by Andrea Atzeni, the six-year-old has had mixed results at Newmarket but his trainer has been very bullish about his charge’s chances of a repeat victory.
A run at Meydan in March is sure to have blown away a few cobwebs and he wasn’t given a hard time, despite being only beaten a short-head. The proximity of Desert Encounter shouldn’t be taken as a literal form line with Ghaiyyah and there will be plenty of interest in the 7/2 with Coral.
Van Dyck looking to draw a line under last year’s inconsistency
Anthony Van Dyck won the Epsom Derby last year and ran some fine races in defeat later but he also threw in the odd poor performance.
Aidan O’Brien will have been working hard to get him back to his best over the winter and he has a terrific record in this race but the Ballydoyle four-year-old probably has a bit to prove in a race like that Coronation Cup on his return to action.
If at his best, the 8/1 with Ladbrokes would be outstanding value but a watching brief may be the best advice.
