Newport v Middlesbrough Preview

The 1-1 draw between these two at the Riverside back on January 26 was the first-ever meeting between the two clubs. Now they will have to go at it all over again to see who moves through to the fifth round of the FA Cup. The Exiles are in the bottom half of League Two and not particularly running in any kind of great form. The Welsh club have taken just three victories in their last 14 fixtures played across all competitions. Two of those three wins were in the FA Cup will. There was a 4-0 win over Wrexham in a second-round replay, and then a 2-1 upset against Premier League side Leicester in the last round. Even though they are not in great form Newport’s home form at Rodney Parade is pretty solid. They have suffered only the one loss in their last 12 home fixtures across all competitions. So that is some strength that they have there and they have actually collected a clean sheet in three of their last four home fixtures. Looking back a little further they have five clean sheets in their last eight at home

Key-Facts – Newport v Middlesbrough

  • Newport have three clean sheets in their last four home games
  • Two of Newport last three home wins have been in the FA Cup
  • Boro have suffered one defeat in their last twelve games away from home

Middlesbrough collected a very good 3-2 away win at the Hawthorns against West Brom in the Championship on the weekend. That extended their current unbeaten form to 7 matches (W4 D3). Middlesbrough nearly got this tie settled at the first time of asking but conceded deep into stoppage time at the Riverside against Newport. So now they face this tricky and uncomfortable away fixture to try and move through to the fifth round. They are the clear favourites to do so. Middlesbrough are a tough side to break down and they are on a streak of form where they have lost only one of their last 12 road fixtures in all competitions. They are currently on a seven-match scoring streak away from home. There may be a small window for Newport though because Middlesbrough have only taken one clean sheet in that run of their last seven away games. This will be Middlesbrough’s first ever visit to Rodney Parade.

Newport v Middlesbrough Predictions

Middlesbrough to win: clean sheets have been few and far between for Middlesbrough away from home, but they do look as if they have the strength to ensure way through this one. Middlesbrough to win by a one-goal margin is at 13/5 odds* (Betting Odds were taken from bet365 on February 2nd, 2019 at 9:12 p.m.)
