Nigeria v Iceland- World Cup 2018

Nigeria v Iceland Betting Preview – World Cup 2018 22nd June – 4.00 p.m

All credit due to Iceland for producing a point against Argentina in their opening group match. That was some debut to the World Cup that the Icelanders made as they held their own well and deserved their point. Can they drive on and bag themselves three points against Nigeria which would keep them in the hunt for a qualification spot? The Africans need to pick themselves up after a lacklustre defeat against Croatia to open with. Read our Nigeria v Iceland predictions for more.

Nigeria News and Form

Nigeria opened their World Cup 2018 campaign with a loss against Croatia, going down 2-0 in the game. They just never really got themselves up and running at all and they didn’t show a tremendous amount of fighting spirit. That is a D1 L4 record that the Africans have posted in their last five games and that is going to leave them vulnerable for this fixture. They have scored in just two of their last five games as well. So this is likely going to be a low scoring game and under 2.5 goals at bet356 is at 8/15 odds* (Betting Odds were taken from June 19th, 2018 at 9:47 p.m.).

So there has been no form from the Super Eagles and if they don’t dig a little deeper here and push on for the win then they are going to be out of this tournament. This probably is going to be a fairly tight game and in the bet365 correct score market, there is decent value at 11/2 on the 1-1 draw* (Betting Odds were taken from June 19th, 2018 at 9:47 p.m.). Nigeria drew a lot of criticism in their defeat against Croatia because they simply dropped their heads and didn’t play with any confidence or commitment really. They will be outperformed by Iceland in those departments.

Iceland News and Form

What an introduction it was for Iceland to World Cup competition. In their first ever game at a World Cup, they held one of the pre-tournament favourites, Argentina to a 1-1 draw. They fully deserved the point that they worked so hard to get. Yes, they were on the back foot and camped in their own half for most of the game, but they remained organised and they played with tremendous spirit. Iceland did also look really good on the break because when the timing was right, they just poured forward and showed some cracks in the Argentinean defence. Throw on top of that their aerial height from set pieces and they will beat rehat in this game. The only concern about backing them outright to win the game is that they are not in winning touch, much like Nigeria. Iceland are only D2 L3 in their last five games played which isn’t great and their defence has been vulnerable in that sequence. But they don’t look too likely to lose against Nigeria realistically and if they can get up a head of steam, there is a big three points on offer for them here. The bet365 first goalscorer market favourite is Alfred Finnbogason who is at 5/1* (Betting Odds were taken from June 19th, 2018 at 9:47 p.m.) and he had a great game up front holding the ball up against Argentina.
