Northern Ireland v Belarus Preview

Goals from Niall McGinn and Steven Davis gave Northern Ireland the ideal start to their Euro 2020 qualification campaign, easing them to victory over Estonia in Belfast. In terms of their overall qualification campaign with the Netherlands and Germany also the group, Northern Ireland really have to take advantage of these easier home games and build some big early momentum.

There was a big relief as well for Northern Ireland as they had lost all four of their Nations League matches. Before that fixture against Estonia, Northern Ireland had only managed three goals in eight competitive fixtures. The first half was another frustrating display of plenty of possession and opportunities but no finishing touch. They managed to find it in the second half though. Northern Ireland have hosted Belarus just once before which was in 2016 international friendly, a game which Northern Ireland won 3-0.

Key-Facts – Northern Ireland v Belarus

  • This will be the first competitive game between Northern Ireland and Belarus
  • Northern Ireland open their Euro 2020 qualification campaign with a win over Estonia
  • Belarus lost 4-0 at the Netherlands on Thursday

Belarus took a hammering in their opening Euro 2020 qualification fixture as they suffered a 4-0 away defeat in the Netherlands. Belarus did win their Nations League group so they have already managed to secure at least a play-off place. That is likely to come into play given how tough this group is going to be for them. Belarus have won only 14 of their 59 previous European Championship qualifying fixtures. Prior to their visit to the Netherlands in midweek Moldova were unbeaten in three away games, winning their last two over Luxembourg and San Marino in the UEFA Nations League. Obviously, this is a big step up in terms of level of competition. In their World Cup 2018 qualification campaign Belarus finished bottom of their group.

Northern Ireland v Belarus Predictions

Northern Ireland to win: The Irish showed plenty of attacking intent against Estonia in midweek and more of the same should suffice against Belarus. Northern Ireland to win to nil at 13/10 odds looks a good fit* (Betting Odds were taken from bet365 on March 22nd, 2019 at 8:34 p.m.)
