Northern Ireland News and Form – Can the Irish beat Germany?

After four wins from four to open their account with, Northern Ireland will be defending the top spot in the group when they met Germany on Monday. It’s a tough game for them and a draw may not be a bad return if they can get it. After taking wins in their games against Estonia and Belarus, the Irish have two games against Germany and two against the Netherlands to go. So they are going to have to take points off of them in one form or another.

They didn’t get a qualifier at the end of last week, instead, they played Luxembourg in a home friendly. Northern Ireland won it 1-0 but it was a really poor, flat game. Still, that moved Northern Ireland onto a five-match winning streak in all matches. So it’s confidence-building and even in this group stage, they have done well to beat what has been in front of them.

Considering Northern Ireland lost all of their Nations League games, this has been good stuff from them. Before this winning streak, they had won just one of eight. Northern Ireland are undefeated in their last seven home European Championship qualifiers (W5 D2). How badly they need that to continue.

Germany News and Form – Can Germany win in Belfast?

Germany missed the boat a bit on Friday night. They lost 4-2 at home against the Netherlands despite having taken the lead in the game. So they missed a big chance to solidify a top-two place having won the first meeting with the Dutch. A win in this one will put them to the top of the group at the expense of Northern Ireland.

Germany won their opening three games of the campaign, and sit three points behind the Irish and three ahead of the Netherlands (who have played a game less than the Germans have). So Germany can’t afford to drop more points as they pay a visit to Belfast. Boss Joachim Low has called on his team to produce a response. Germany are W3 D1 L1 in their last five games since the end of the Nations League.

The two failures to win in that sequence both happened at home. Out on the road in his group, Germany have won their two games against the Netherlands and Belarus. Three of their four matches played in the group have gone over 4.5 goals. In their last eight European Championship away qualifiers, Germany have won six of them. They scored at least two goals in each of those six victories as well.

Northern Ireland v Germany Predictions

Germany to win: We think that Germany have enough about them, especially coming in riled up after their loss against rivals the Netherlands, to get the win. They have the extra scoring quality that the Irish lack. We’ll take Northern Ireland to keep it level at the break though, but Germany to win outright.
