Oxford United News and Form – In-form Yellows to go through?
Karl Robinson’s Oxford United are a team in stunning form at the moment. The Yellows have not been beaten in any competition since falling to a 2-1 league defeat at Fleetwood Town back in early September. Since then, the U’s have won seven and drawn three of their last ten league and cup affairs.
Last Saturday, Oxford eased to a 3-0 win over Rochdale at the Kassam Stadium, which extended their unbeaten run in League One to eight (six wins, two draws). The Boys from Up the Hill find themselves in fifth place at the moment, three points above eighth-placed Sunderland.
Oxford have seen off Peterborough United, Millwall and West Ham United to reach the last 16. The Yellows were outstanding against Premier League West Ham in the previous round, thumping the Hammers 4-0. Can they book their spot in the last eight with victory over Sunderland on Tuesday?
Oxford United vs Sunderland Head to Head
Back in August, these two drew 1-1 at the Stadium of Light in the league
The last three Oxford v Sunderland meetings have ended in 1-1 draws, with each of the last four finishing level
Sunderland beat Oxford 7-0 in an Old Division One encounter back in September 1998, which was the last time any side have won in this fixture
United have not beaten the Black Cats since 1994
- The U’s are unbeaten in ten, with seven of those being wins
- Sunderland have lost three of their last four in League One
- Both teams saw off Premier League opposition in the previous round
Sunderland News and Form – Can the Black Cats reach the last eight?
Sunderland, who reached the League Cup final in 2014, have beaten Accrington Stanley, Burnley and Sheffield United so far. However, the Black Cats go into Tuesday’s cup clash at the Kassam Stadium having lost three of their last four in League One to slip down to eighth.
After an emphatic 5-0 victory over Tranmere Rovers at the Stadium of Light, which was Phil Parkinson’s first home game in charge, Sunderland fell to a disappointing 1-0 loss at Shrewsbury Town last time out. The wasteful Blacks Cats dominated at New Meadow, but Jason Cummings’ first-half goal won the points for the Shrews.
After some poor form in the league, Sunderland could do with victory in the EFL Cup in midweek. However, that will not be easy against a side who are above them in the League One table at present.

Oxford United vs Sunderland Predictions
Oxford United: The U’s are in stunning form at the moment, with Robinson really starting to stamp his authority at the Kassam Stadium. It’s been over 25 years since their last win over the Black Cats, but I fancy United to get past Sunderland in the Round of 16 of the Carabao Cup on Tuesday. Back the hosts to prevail in the 90 at 6/4.
Sunderland hit Tranmere for five in their one and only win under new boss Parkinson, but they failed to score in the other two. There’s superb value in 15/4 for Oxford to win to nil in midweek.
