A Paddy Power punter defied odds of 5,174/1 over the weekend to earn themselves a win of over £5,000. That was all from a simple £1 stake.
Well, simple isn’t quite the right word, because the winning bet was a staggering 17-fold accumulator which was played.
Porto strikes late in the final leg of the bet
The final leg of the bet was resting on Porto winning a home match against Portimonense in the Portuguese top flight.
Porto were heavy favourites for the maximum points haul, but it turned out to be hard work for them to get.
Not only did their opponents miss the chance to take a first-half lead from the penalty spot, but it also looked as if they were going to hold out for a point.
It wasn’t until the 87th minute of the fixture that Proto found a winner.
Plenty of drama along the way
That wasn’t the only drama in the big bet. Of a bet that size, it was never going to be.
Extremadura to beat Mirandes in the Spanish second tier had been another pick on the wager. They only obliged in the 91st minute of the fixture.

Back in Portugal, Ferrerira had a two-goal lead until the 89th minute when Famalicao pulled one back against them.
Having backed Ferreira to win, the punter’s heart was probably in his mouth as the Famalicao were awarded a 98th-minute spot-kick, yes 98th-minute penalty kick, to draw the game. The penalty was missed and the 17-fold acca stayed active.
Other tight calls were Arsenal’s come-from-behind win over Everton, while Rennes only slotted a home a winner in the 89th minute in their game against Nimes in the French top flight.
Thrills and spills there certainly were in the £1. But the UK based punter would have been laughing all the way to the bank afterwards.
