Saturday is a big trials day at Prestbury Park ahead of this year’s Cheltenham Festival. The 13:50 is the Paddy Power 45 Sleeps To Cheltenham Trophy Handicap Chase (grade 3).
10 starters will be lining up in the fixture for this 2m 4f Class 1 challenge. With the race sponsors Paddy Power there has been a superbly tight two-way tussle for supremacy.
Warthog and Highway One O One are the joint 11/2 favourites for the race* (betting odds taken from Paddy Power on January 24th, 2020 at 3:49 pm).
Warthog delivered a C&D win in the Caspian Caviar Gold Cup which followed on from his very good run at the BetVictor Gold Cup. He is only going up 4lbs for this latest outing as well. So it’s not a drastic extra challenge for him.
Highway One O One was a third-place finisher in his last outing. That was at Kempton over a 3m trip in December. He hasn’t quite shown the form that Warthog has brought to the table, but is expected to once again bring his asset to the table which is consistency.
It’s not just a two-horse race, of course. There is Militarian who went well at the course on January 1st over 3m 2f. Lalor put together a very good run at Cheltenham that same day, missing out on the win by a photo finishes.
Then there is Count Meribel who didn’t live up to expectations at the BetVictor Gold Cup. However, could have benefitted from a nice couple of months away.
