The Draw

The top 32 players on the European Tour Order of Merit all get their places at the tournament. That Order of Merit is based on prize money won across the thirteen European tour events. The draw is set up as a fixed bracket with 1st seed playing 32nd, 2nd seed playing 31st, 3rd seed playing 30th and so on. It is a straight knockout format

Van Gerwen the favourite

Michael Van Gerwen is the clear favourite to get his hands on the title. He has won it in each of the last four years so why expect anything to change? He has been in good form lately with wins at the World Grand Prix and the PDC European Darts Trophy he has come back into good form. Even though there’s not much meat on the bone, 8/11 odds on Van Gerwen are hard to oppose* (betting odds taken on October 25th, 2018 at 10:50 pm) .

Peter Wright could be an interesting factor in the field and that is because he is in Van Gerwen’s quarter. He recently lost the final of the World Grand Prix against MVG and the last significant tournament win for him was at the Melbourne Masters back in August. Probably hasn’t got the beating of Van Gerwen at the moment, and he would have to get past Simon Whitlock too.

Whitlock is 8th seed (Wright is 9th) and Australia’s Whitlock has a bit of history at the tournament. He was the winner of the 2012 title and he followed that up by reaching the 2013 final as well where he lost to Adrian Lewis.

Still, you get the feeling that you may just have to write everyone off in Van Gerwen’s quarter.

Rob Cross last won a title at the Brisbane Masters back in August and he and Michael Smith are in the second quarter which puts them in the direct path of opposition to Van Gerwen at the semi-final stage.

The bottom half of the draw

Avoiding the top half of the draw completely because of MVG where is the value in the bottom half? Second seed Mensur Suljovic is a great option to have a decent run at the tournament, but at 7/1 odds to win outright* (betting odds taken on October 25th, 2018 at 10:50 pm) that’s not worth biting on really. The bottom half of the table looks really weak compared to the top half.

You have Gerwyn Price as the third seed down there and it’s hard to put any stock into the Welshman making a deep run. 14th seed Adrian Lewis doesn’t have any form behind him, despite being a previous winner of the tournament. So the best option may be to have a look at Daryl Gurney who is a more appealing 16/1 each way odds option* (betting odds taken on October 25th, 2018 at 10:50 pm).

The Northern Ireland darter recently went to the semis of the World Grand Prix and the quarters of the PDC European Darts Trophy. He hasn’t won a title for a long time, but still, at each way that’s backing him really just to win his semi final match.

Predictions

It just looks as if it is going to be one of those tournaments where opposing the favourite is going to be hard to do. We can’t really find much justification to do so, even though Van Gerwen could face some tricky matches along the way. The Dutchman is back in form, has the tournament history and looks a banker.
