There’s little doubt about who is the man to beat in the first quarter of the PDC Darts World Championship 2020 draw. That’s three-time World Champion Michael van Gerwen. It’s a nice and comfortable-looking draw for the Dutchman to be fair and he should be a lock for a quarter-final berth.

MVG the clear front runner
Given that Michael van Gerwen is the tournament favourite, he will be expected to breeze through his quarter. It’s not a difficult path ahead of him, not unless a bit of complacency in the early stages of proceedings creeps into his game. But in having claimed two televised titles in November, Mighty Mike seems to be back in the zone.
Opposing him at the quarter-final stages it is likely to be 8th seed James Wade or 9th seed Ian White if things go to ranking and form. Considering the longer matches involved at the PDC Darts World Championship 2020, it’s hard to see either of them doing enough to bring down MVG over an extended match.
But it is White who may just be the one to shade the race to at least get to face MVG in the First Quarter of the draw. He did collect a couple of European Tour titles in 2019 and one of those was against Michael van Gerwen. At the recent Players Championship Finals, White won his first-ever televised quarter-final.
