Scottish power-duo to land World Cup?

Darts Betting

The seventh edition of the PDC Darts World Cup is being contested over the weekend, but it kicks off on Thursday, June 1st. The tournament runs through to the fourth and is being hosted out at the Eissporthalle in Frankfurt, Germany. This is organised by the PDC and it is a 32-team tournament with the winners sharing the main prize of £60,000. So not a bad weekend’s work at all then really. This, of course, is the rare darts event where you will see nations competing against each other and this is for two-man teams and a chance for players to represent their country.

There were changes to the format last year with the group stage being eliminated as the tournament switched to a straight knockout right from the off. For the first round there is the best of nine legs doubles; the second round, quarter final and semi finals sees two best of seven legs single matches. If there is a tie then there is a best of seven legs double match to settle things. For the Final itself three points are needed to win the title. There two best of seven legs singles matches followed by a best of seven doubles match.

PDC Darts World Cup Preview

So this is the seventh edition of the PDC Darts World Cup and England have won four of the previous six. It has been the pairing of Phil Taylor and Adrian Lewis which has gained so much success for England at the tournament and last year they battled their way past Michael van Gerwen and Raymond van Barneveld for the Netherlands. It is worth noting that there is a big change for England this time around as there is no Phil Taylor. He has stepped aside and so the English team go with Dave Chisnall pairing up with Adrian Lewis. That has obviously seen their odds drift a little bit, but that having been said, they are still an appealing price to come through the pack and win the thing outright as an underdog. Chisnall finished fifth in this season’s Premier League Darts with Lewis finishing eighth. They may be underestimated.

The powerhouse nation of darts is the Netherlands and that is pretty much because of Michael van Gerwen who just about wins everything that he enters. MVG won the Premier League again this season after beating out Peter Wright in the final. He is back with his old buddy Raymond van Barneveld for the Netherlands and they have experience in the tournament, winning it in 2014 when they beat the partner of Taylor and Lewis. Without Taylor around, that should swing further favouritism to the 7/5 outright favourites at bet365 to win the PDC Darts World Cup 2017. They are the only nation alongside England to have won it before as Raymond Van Barneveld won the inaugural edition with Co Stompe back in 2010.

Scotland makes for a very interesting team in this one with Gary Anderson and Peter Wright teaming up. Both were very strong in the Premier League this season and they can pack a punch here and they beat out England to second favourites behind the Dutch going into the tournament. The Scots, with this very pairing, did get to the 2015 final where they were stopped by the English and there is no reason that they Scottish duo can’t get back there this weekend. They will be carrying form forward and they are a very solid punt.

The main challengers then behind the big three for the PDC Darts World Cup are Wales and Australia. The Australians are running with Simon Whitlock and Kyle Anderson for the tournament, while the Welsh are being represented by Gerwyn Price and Mark Webster. But then they, along with the Belgians are a big, big price to get the title on the board because it is going to be a massive upset if either the Netherlands, England or Scotland don’t walk away with the title.

PDC Darts World Cup Draw

Scotland are top seeds for the tournament and that means they get the most comfortable draw, which is all important because it leaves England and the Netherlands paired up in the bottom half of the draw. Those two would meet at the semi final stage of the competition and realistically, neither of them should have a problem getting there, but England does have the easier quarter to get through. Scotland should sail through their quarter with their first tricky test likely to come against the Belgians in the quarter finals. But then it would be only one of the longer shots like Australia or Wales waiting for them in the semi finals. They have a real shot at this.

PDC Darts World Cup Prediction

Scotland at 7/4 with Ladbrokes looks a very sound bet to get out of this with the title because frankly, the draw is heavily on their side in his one. With both Peter Wright and Gary Anderson having had very good Premier League seasons, they can handle themselves in this quick fire pressure of straight knockouts. It should be close between them and the Netherlands, but Scotland are value.
