Pertemps Network Swinton Handicap Hurdle – Horse Racing Betting May 10

Give thought to Nietzsche in the Swinton Hurdle

Horse Racing Betting

Time can distort the memory but I’m sure at one time that the Pertemps Network Swinton Handicap Hurdle was a race run at the end of a National Hunt season and not the beginning. However, seasons are such a blurred line nowadays that anyone can get confused. The fact remains that this is the last big opportunity for 2m hurdlers to pick up a nice prize before being put away for the summer.

Swinton Hurdle History and Trends

First run in 1978, the Swinton Handicap Hurdle is a Grade 3 race run over 2m at Haydock Park for horses aged four years or older.

Key races which have provided pointers for this race in recent years include the Scottish County Hurdle, Imperial Cup and Scottish Champion Hurdle.

  • There hasn’t been a winner aged older than seven in 20 years.
  • 11 of the past 12 winners have been aged between five and seven.
  • 10 of the last 12 winners had run within the previous 36 days.
  • Four-year-olds have to have plenty of class to win the Swinton Hurdle as they only get 4lb from older horses at this time of the year.
  • Horses carrying 11st 7lb or more struggle to give the weight away as 26 have tried in the last 13 years and only two have managed to make the frame.
  • Those rated between 126 and 135 have an outstanding record.
  • A past career on the Flat is usually a good guide.

Haydock-RacesCubswin and Arthington (both a general 16/1) finished first and second over 2m at Haydock three weeks ago but are upped in class and also the weights. Dino Velvet (a general 10/1) finished second in the Scottish Champion Hurdle at Ayr, ahead of Leoncavallo (a best 14/1), and that race has been a decent trial for this in the past.

Sofia’s Rock, a useful middle-distance performer on the Flat, has made a promising start to his career over hurdles for Dan Skelton. He remains unexposed but this is by far his toughest assignment to date and the handicapper has taken no chances so the general 6/1 looks poor value. Christopher Wood is only four but is not without a chance on his third to Pentland Hills in a Grade 1 contest at Aintree and Paul Nicholls’ gelding can be backed at 8/1 with Boylesports among others.

Flying Tiger (a general 20/1) has dropped to a fair mark and Champagne City (a general 16/1) would not be winning out of turn but keeps creeping up the handicap without getting his head in front. Mister Fisher would probably have preferred softer ground so the general 7/1 makes little appeal and the 2017 winner John Constable has done little lately to account for best odds of 10/1 at Ladbrokes.

NIETZSCHE won the valuable Greatwood Handicap Hurdle at Cheltenham in the autumn, which earned him a 6lb rise in the ratings. he couldn’t cope at Ascot next time but that was on soft ground. He’s only raced over hurdles once since and ran well for third at Aintree and he followed that up with a solid effort over 1m4f on the Flat. Danny McMenanamin claims 7lb and gets on well with Brian Ellison’s charge, who isn’t fazed by big fields and a fast pace. At a general 16/1, the six-year-old is surely too big.
