Petra Kvitova turned out some performance in the fourth round. She was up against American youngster Amanda Anisimova, who had previously knocked out the in-form Aryna Sabalenka. However, Kvitova was having none of any upset talk as she simply steamrollered her opponent. The left-hander dropped just the three games as she eased herself to victory against one of the brightest young talents around.

While this match against Barty will be her toughest test yet, that win over Anisimova and Belinda Bencic in the previous round has seen Kvitova hit top gear. She is right in form as shown at the recent Sydney International when she won the title. It was against Barty that Kvitova took the success in Sydney. It was a really tight match though and it showed the resilience of Kvitova.

Barty had won the first set of that Sydney final 6-1 but then Kvitova roared back, taking the deciding set on a tie break. Barty has, of course, received plenty of support in the tournament so far in from her home crowd. Her big challenge in the fourth round happened in taking on Maria Sharapova, the Russian looking ruthless and determined at Melbourne Park.

After dropping the first set, Barty looked in trouble, but then she didn’t skip a beat as she powered her way back to a 6-1 win in the second, before ending up serving out the match for a 6-4 win in the third, despite some late resistance from the Russian. That was a huge effort from Barty. Whatever happens she isn’t going to go down without a fight.

Head to head

The two have met three times before. That was that aforementioned win for Kvitova in the final of Sydney earlier this month. The Czech player has won the other two meetings as well, those being at the 2012 French Open and in Birmingham 2017.

Prediction

Barty really turned on the power when her back was against the wall opposing Sharapova. But we just can’t ignore the early form of Kvitova and have to stick with her coming through and getting the win on the board as the 4/7 favourite* (betting odds taken from bet365 on January 13th, 2019 at 11:27 pm)
