Kvitova returns to Grand Slam Final

Petra Kvitova came past the challenge of Danielle Collins in her semifinal match. After a tight first set of having traded breaks, it was Kvitova who held her nerve to get the first set on a tie break. It was plain sailing for her then as her opponent, playing in her first Australian Open, crumbled under the pressure of the situation.

Kvitova is the eighth seed at the tournament and she has been in top form all the way. She was in form before arriving in Melbourne actually, as she picked up the Sydney International prior to the Grand Slam action this month. The first set of her semi-final against Collins is the first time that we have really seen Kvitova under pressure at the tournament. The Czech star has looked untouchable.

Kvitova it a two-time Wimbledon champion and this is the first time that she has made it through to a Grand Slam final outside of her two Wimbledon championship crowns. Her previous best finish at an Australian Open was in 2012 when she was a losing semi-finalist. Kvitova is the 8/11 odds-on favourite to win the final* (betting odds taken from bet365 on January 24th, 2019 at 4:46 pm). If she does that she will become the top-ranked player in the world for the first time ever.

Osaka makes it back to back Slam Finals

Naomi Osaka burst on to the Grand Slam scene at Flushing Meadows last year, taking an unexpected title at the US Open. She had never been past the fourth round of a Grand Slam before that, so that was a monumental effort from her, probably made sweeter as it was the legend Serena Williams who she beat in the final. Now she is back in her second consecutive Grand Slam Final.

Osaka was the underdog for her semifinal match against Karolina Pliskova. After fourth seed Osaka had taken the first set relatively comfortably, she then had to withstand the fight back from Pliskova. It was Osaka who got over the line in the deciding set 6-4. Three of her last four matches at the Australian Open have now needed three sets to be settled. Over 2.5 sets is at 11/8 for the Final* (betting odds taken from bet365 on January 24th, 2019 at 4:46 pm).

Key-Facts – Kvitova v Osakab

  • This is Kvitova’s third Grand Slam Final, Osaka’s second
  • Kvitova has not dropped a set en-route to the Final
  • Kvitova will move to World Number One with a win

Prediction

Petra Kvitova has looked unplayable when she is not making unforced errors. Still, even with that niggle in her game, she has looked powerful and has not dropped a set. Osaka has proven that her US Open Final last year wasn’t just a fluke, she is in business at the top end of a game.

But Kvitova just looks 100% primed and ready at the moment and a 2-0 set betting option on her is at 7/4 odds
