Spieth, Thomas, Rahm and Leishman strong contenders at East Lake

Golf Betting

It is the final tournament of the PGA season. So it is all eyes on Georgia this week at East Lake to see who will be crowned the FedexCup winner for the season. The final 30 players left standing after the FedExCup play offs will be competing in this one and the way that the event is set up, it means that all players have a shot at walking off with the big prize. It is indeed a big prize with the top player walking off with a cool $10 million purse.

Really it is all about positioning for this one because the higher you are up in the rankings in the final 30, the better the chance you have of winning this one. For example, current leader Jordan Spieth has a pretty reasonable chance of being crowned the champion as long as he finishes inside the top five because of the points set up for the Tour Championship. He could finish second from last and still mathematically have a chance at winning the crown. So that is the position of power that he has played his way into. Only the top five players in the standings, who are Jordan Spieth, Justin Thomas, Dustin Johnson, Marc Leishman and Jon Rahm will guarantee themselves the FedExCup if they produce a win.

Jordan Spieth 5/1, Dustin Johnson 15/2, Rickie Fowler 15/2, Justin Thomas 10.1, Jon Rahm 9/1, Jason Day 10/1, Justin Rose 14/1, Paul Casey 18/1, Marc Leishman 20/1, Hideki Matsuyama 20/1, Brooks Koepka 20/1, bar 22/1

Heading to East Lake, Spieth has landed in the top ten in each of the three play off tournaments, and only two other players in the field have managed to carry through that strong consistency. They were Jon Rahm and Justin Rose who have been top ten finishers in the last three events. But of the entire field competition at East Lake this week, it is only Spieth who has previously won at the course before.

Spieth is trading at 5/1 outright favourite with bet365 to win the Tour Championships has been getting plenty of backing. But there are strong challengers around like Rahm and Rose. Justin Thomas and Dustin Johnson are both in decent nick as well and they have tallied a total of nine tournament victories between them this season and they are both capable of making a run at the title here. After a strong season, Hideki Matsuyama has just gone off the boil since the PGA Championship in August.

Then there is Marc Leishman who has burst into form with a win at the BMW Championships and a third in his outing before that. So he has been coming good at the right time in the play offs and the second place finishes for Rickie Fowler alongside Justin Rose at the BMW Championships behind Leishman will have done them both the power of good. Justin Thomas has won two of his last four events while Jon Rahm has carded a top five finish in each of his last three tournaments.

So if you are looking at current form, Spieth, Thomas, Rahm and Leishman could be the ones to pick from, with Justin Rose running as a strong outside shot along with Webb Simpson who has three top tens in his last four starts. This betting preview is all just to win the Tour Championship, the event, not who gets their hands on the FedExCup title. There are so many different mathematical connotations that can play out if someone outside of the top five players wins the tournament in terms of who gets their hands on the FedExCup.
