Tournament of Champions 2019 Preview

Dustin Johnson is the reigning champion after his massive 8-stroke victory over Jon Rahm a year ago. That was the American’s second title at the event and it’s no surprise to see him trading so strongly at the head of the market. Johnson’s first win was back 2013 in a 4-stroke win over Steve Stricker.

Two of the last three editions of the Tournament of Champions have been won by an 8-stroke margin as Jordan Spieth did that with a victory over Patrick Reed in 2017. Sandwiched between those two was 2017 winner Justin Thomas who won by three-strokes that year. Thomas is back for another crack and is being well supported in the market.

Notable Contenders

It is so early in the season that it’s hard to get a full read on everything. Xander Schauffele won the WGC HSBC Champions back end of October and he was poking around at the Hero World Challenge in early December where he got a T8. Bryson Dechambeau was one of the brightest sparks in the final quarter of the 2018 calendar year. This will be his second attempt at the tournament after failing to make an impact twelve months ago.

Dechambeau is in the final group of the first round action, so will have targets head of him. Getting a later start in the first round as well is Webb Simpson whose form at the Tournament of Champions may well pull in punters. Webb Simpson has a bit of course form as he taken a third-place finish in two of his last three tournament appearances. It is usually is an event where first-timers have a tough time coming through the field, so it may be worth considering a player who knows what is ahead.

Strong Depth in the Field

Former winner Patrick Reed is back in the field for another attempt, looking to add to his 2015 success. Rory McIlroy will be swinging into the event once again as he goes in search of his first success. Reigning PGA TOUR Player of the Year Brooks Koepka will be looking for a strong start to the calendar year, while Marc Leishman has been busier than most following World Cup and Australian PGA action. He had form in both of them as well and is that strong each-way 25/1 odds range* (Betting Odds were taken from bet365 on January 2nd, 2019 at 1:17 p.m.).

Predictions

It should be an exciting start to the calendar year in the golf. There’s no cut at the Tournament of Champions and so it’s worth looking at some bigger prices. Webb Simpson at 22/1 is a good fit * (Betting Odds were taken from bet365 on January 2nd, 2019 at 1:17 p.m.) because of the way he has performed in Maui in recent appearances. Leishman because of his workload will also have appeal while of the main front-runners Brooks Koepka looks a pretty strong option to carry over his immense 2018 form into the new year.
