The countdown to the US Open continues and there is the big St Jude Classic tournament going on this week on the PGA Tour. This is being hosted in Tennessee and players will want to really try and gather some momentum ahead of the second major championship of the season. This field isn’t looking as strong as it has done in the past few years it has to be said, and that may actually be a boost for punters looking to back some of the stronger players in the field.

TPC Southwind, just outside of Memphis has some big water issues for players down the back nine and with the major overhaul that the course has gone through, it’s a little tricky to really nail down past form at the tournament to apply towards what is going down in the current year. There have been two debutant winners in the last four seasons at the St Jude Classic and that includes last year’s winner Daniel Berger who came from nowhere to shine. Berger is 25/1 at Boylesports to go and defend his title.

Rickie Fowler is running as 8/1 outright favourite in St Jude Classic golf betting this year and he is a man in form. He was runner-up on the weekend out in Ohio and this will be just the second appearance at TPC Southwind for him. He is leading the Tour in strokes gained at the moment and as we mentioned above, just because there is no prior track record at TPC Southwind, it doesn’t mean that he can’t get in contention here, particularly after taming Muirfield Village last weekend.

St Jude Classic Golf betting odds

Rickie Fowler 8/1, Brooks Koepka 11/1, Adam Scott 14/1, Phil Mickelson 18/1, Francesco Molinari 18/1, Daniel Berger 25/1, Kyle Stanley 28/1, Russell Henley 28/1, Billy Horschel 30/1, bar 33/1

Adam Scott is making his first appearance in a decade at the tournament and he is in search of some form ahead of the US Open next week. It may say something to punters though that it has taken him this long to get back to TPC Southwind. His last outing there he held a three-shot lead going into Sunday and blew it with a horrid 75 on the final recent. He has some demons to banish here but is carrying som form with a top ten at both the Masters and The Players.

Brooks Koepka has a solid record at the event with a T19, T3 and a T2 from his previous visits. He is going to have appeal at that 11/1 price as he knows his way around the course a bit. Then you have Phil Mickelson who makes a fascinating proposition this week in golf betting. He has announced that he is going to miss the US Open so that he can attend his daughter’s graduation and that means all pressure is off of him. Like Koepka, Mickelson has a good track record recently at TPC Southwind as well, with two-second places since 2013.

Another man with a bit of form at TPC Southwind is Billy Horschel who has three top tens in a row there 2013-2015 and has the game, ranking 10th in greens in regulation, to get himself in the mix and makes a great top ten finish option at Boylesports for this week for a price of 3/1. Given what he has produced lately, Ian Poulter may be worth a longer dabble at 50/1 each way as he seems to have gotten his fire back. A recent T2 at The Players coupled with a T6 at the St Jude Classic in 2014, the pieces fit.
