Porto News and Form

Is Porto’s time in this season’s Champions League up? They have a long way to go to get back in this tie, trailing 2-0 from their trip to Anfield. Last season in the round of sixteen they hosted Liverpool and lost 5-0 at home. Porto are now on a D3 L4 record in their seven previous fixtures against Liverpool, so are still on the hunt for that first win over the Reds. This would be a fine time to get it, but they need three goals on the night. They are looking to secure a semi-final berth for the first time since the 2003/04 season. That season they won the tournament with Jose Mourinho in charge. Their record in two-legged ties against English clubs is W3 L8.

Porto are in form at home, winning all four of their European games there this season. So that’s a huge positive for them. They have won eight of their last fifteen home games (D2 L5), one of them a success over Roma in the last round. Overall their home record against English clubs is W8 D6 L4. Back in the group stage, the Dragons earned more points (16) than any other team did. Porto have won only five of the 21 UEFA competition ties in which they lost the away first leg. However, they have lost their last five two-legged ties against English sides.

Key-Facts – Porto v Liverpool

  • Porto have won all Champions League home games this season
  • Porto are winless against Liverpool in all previous meetings
  • The Reds have never lost a tie after winning the first leg away 2-0

Liverpool News and Form

Liverpool are in charge thanks to goals from Naby Keïta and Roberto Firmino in the first leg. All six of the games between these two played before this tie, have come since 2000, with Liverpool being well up against the Dragons in the head to head. From their previous 14 European Cup quarter-final teams, Liverpool have won all but four. In the last round, they produced a fantastic victory at Bayern Munich in the second leg of their tie, banking a 3-1 success. However, Liverpool did lose all three of their away games in the group stage, which was really odd.

Liverpool have actually lost five of their last ten European games, and each of the losses suffered in that sequence were outside of England. Liverpool have triumphed in 31 UEFA competition ties when they have won the home first leg. On each of the seven occasions that they have won the first leg at home 2-0, they have gone on to win the tie. Out on the road in all competitions currently, Liverpool are undefeated in their last seven played (W4 D3), winning the last three. Just once all season have Liverpool suffered a defeat by a two-goal margin on their travels, which was at Red Star Belgrade in the group stage.

Porto v Liverpool Predictions

Porto – Draw Double Chance: there is a bit of a feeling that Porto are not done yet in this tie, although they have a big mountain to climb in order to try and reach the semifinals. While that might not happen at the end of the day, they may have enough about them to go it and the least avoid defeat in this game as they have a good go at Liverpool. Porto-Draw double chance.
