Portugal v Switzerland Betting Tips – Nations League, 5th June 7.45pm

Switzerland certainly made some waves in the group stage of the Nations League. They produced a stunning 5-2 win over Belgium in their final match to beat the Belgians to top spot in the group and reach the semi-finals. That was a pretty big upset. As for Portugal, they did all the groundwork in this campaign without Cristiano Ronaldo, but he’s back in action for this. Read our predictions for Portugal v Switzerland.

Portugal News and Form – Can Portugal beat the Swiss again?

A big thing that Portugal have going for them in the Nations League Finals is that they are hosting. So that’s home field advantage for them. How much of a factor will this be as they push towards trying to become the first ever Nations League winners? Portugal were up against Italy and Poland in the group stage, remaining undefeated there in their four games. At home, they beat Italy 1-0 and played out a 1-1 draw against Poland.

Cristiano Ronaldo has rejoined the squad after getting a pass from the group stage matches of the Nations League. So their progress through that group showed that they can do things without him. Still, it’s must be pretty handy to have him around nonetheless. Ronaldo is an 8/13 anytime goalscorer option for this fixture* (Betting Odds were taken from bet365 on May 29th, 2019 at 8:00 am p.m.). Since losing in the World Cup 2018 quarterfinals against Uruguay, Poland are undefeated in eight games. They have lost one of their last fifteen.

Of their four games in the UEFA Nations League group stage, three of them went under 2.5 goals. The one that went over was their 3-2 success in Poland. Portugal and Switzerland had a great duel during World Cup 2018 qualification, so they have had some recent big clashes. They traded 2-0 home wins in that qualification campaign, Portugal’s win coming at home in the final round of matches, which saw them just pip the Swiss to top spot on goal difference.

Switzerland News and Form – Can Swiss cause an upset?

Switzerland produced a wonderful upset in their group in the Nations League. Before the start, they weren’t given much of a hope of winning the group against Belgium. Belgium won the first meeting between the 2-1. So that left the Swiss hosting the Red Devils in the final round of action, trailing them by three points and in the head to head goal difference. So they needed a two-goal margin victory. They did a lot better than that as they ran rampant and produced a stunning 5-2 win.

So that put the Swiss through to the Finals on head to head goal difference over Belgium. Belgium incidentally had been pre-tournament favourites. The Swiss are now W4 D1 L3 in their last eight games, both friendly and competitive games combined. Their big World Cup qualification and their Nations League group stage showed what they are capable of. They won their first nine games of World Cup 2018 qualification before crucially losing that last one against Portugal. They still qualified for the 2018 World cup through the playoffs.

At the World Cup, Switzerland bowed out in the first knockout phase, suffering a 1-0 loss against Sweden after a really tame performance when they got everything tactically wrong pretty much. Still, the loss against Sweden is only one of two that they have taken in their last ten competitive games. Switzerland have netted at least two goals in each of their last four competitive games. There is every reason that they will show up and gave Portugal a really good run for their money on the day.

Portugal v Switzerland Predictions

Portugal to win: While Portugal are still thought of being a one-man band (Cristiano Ronaldo) that’s not really the case. They have a very solid set up and the future looks good with some young quality in the ranks. They may have enough to edge the Swiss with Ronaldo back in the fold too.
