Portugal v Ukraine Preview

Because of the shake-up of things for Euro 2020, Portugal, who are the reigning European champions, have to go through qualification. They don’t get an automatic spot. They showed in the Nations League that there is life after Cristiano Ronaldo, as they topped their group over Italy and Poland. Ronaldo didn’t take part in any of those games as he was given time to settle into his new life after moving to Juventus in the summer. Portugal beat Italy and were held to a draw by Poland in their two Nations League home games. Portugal are undefeated in their six internationals since the start of September last year. Adrien Silva has scored two of their last four goals. Their only defeat in their last thirteen games, competitive and friendly, was their round of sixteen defeat to Uruguay at the 2018 World Cup.

Key-Facts – Portugal v Ukraine

  • Portugal have lost one of their last thirteen games only
  • Portugal are undefeated in their last five on home soil
  • Ukraine have lost only one of their last ten internationals

There has definitely been a bit of a upswing in the form of Ukraine. After missing out to Iceland and Croatia during their World Cup 2018 qualification, they won their Nations League group ahead of the Czech Republic and Slovakia, winning three of their four games. Away from home they took a win in the Czech Republic but suffered a shock heavy defeat at Slovakia. The 4-1 blow out in Slovakia is their only loss in their last ten internationals though, winning half of those fixtures. While in that run they haven’t particularly been up against strong sides, in their last four games they have held Italy and Turkey to draws and took a win over the Czech Republic. At least this strong run of form from them should be doing wonders for their Euro 2020 qualification hopes. The last time Ukraine and Portugal met was in World Cup 1998 qualification, with the two trading one-goal margin home wins.

Portugal v Ukraine Predictions

Portugal to win: This could well end up being a really tight game as Ukraine could prove to be a stubborn opponent. However, Portugal to get a narrow win because they have been in good form looks a good fit. Portugal to win to nil at even money* (Betting Odds were taken from bet365 on March 19th, 2019 at 3:50 p.m.)
