With about a third of the Premier League season left to go, the race for a top-four finish got a little more interesting on Monday night. Manchester United, with a lot of help from VAR, collected a 2-0 win at Chelsea to move within just three points of the Blues who are occupying fourth.

Liverpool are striding towards the title, while Man City and Leicester have put together huge claims for top-four finishes as well.

So with the top three in the table streets ahead (third-placed Leicester are nine points clear of fourth-pleaced Chelsea), it is the race for fourth place, the final Champions League place (maybe) that is drawing the most interest.

Premier League Top Four Finish Odds*

Leicester 1/10
Chelsea 10/11
Tottenham 8/4
Man Utd 15/5
Wolves 14/1

Will a top-five finish get to the Champions League 2020/21?

Manchester City were hit with a two-year ban from UEFA competition last week (starting next season). So there is a potential scenario that UEFA may award City’s place to the fifth-place finisher in the Premier League this season.

That makes things even more interesting. But there’s no guarantee of that with the Citizens set to appeal their ban.

Chelsea 10/11*

Frank Lampard’s Blues are just about holding down fourth place, but a home loss against Manchester United on Monday rattled them further. They have now won just one of their last six league games and have claimed just five wins in thirteen home games this season.

With a lack of clinical finishing hampering them, they are starting to slide and the chasing pack has managed to reel them in. Do Chelsea have the legs to get to the end of the season? They look a little bit wobbly at the moment and don’t really have the home form to back up sustainability. They are still 10/11 odds-on but looking vulnerable* (betting odds taken from Bet365 on February 17th, 2020 at 23:09).

Tottenham 9/4*

What to make of Tottenham? Jose Mourinho’s men have been up and down and all over the place since the turn of the new year. They are W3 D1 L2 in 2020 in Premier League action. However, they are on a three-match winning streak currently.

But they have ridden their luck, needing late interventions from Son Heung Min to get wins against Norwich and Aston Villa in their three-match winning streak. Sandwiched in between that was a very good 2-0 home win over Manchester City though.

This is all without Harry Kane of course. While Dele Alli has come to life under Mourinho, and Son Heung Min is going very well, they have a heavy workload to come. Will they be able to handle things if those two start running out of steam? Spurs are currently 9/4 second-favourites to book a top four finish* (betting odds taken from Bet365 on February 17th, 2020 at 23:09)

Man Utd 15/4*

The Red Devils are now on the radar after winning at Stamford Bridge on Monday. It was not a great, fluent, wonderful performance from them at all. It was more of simply getting the job done than anything else. Things could easily have swung against them too, with Harry Maguire mystifyingly not getting red-carded in the first half.

But regardless, points are points and life rolls on. United are now only three points behind Chelsea in the race for a top-four finish. While it has been a campaign of struggles for the Red Devils, they have managed to pull themselves into contention at 15/4* (betting odds taken from Bet365 on February 17th, 2020 at 23:09)

Part of it could be down to weaknesses from the others of the so-called Big Six like Chelsea, Tottenham and Arsenal. A positive too is that it has happened without looking much more than average. If there’s more to come, they could get in the picture.

Wolverhampton 14/1*

Wolves are an interesting proposition at 14/1 odds* (betting odds taken from Bet365 on February 17th, 2020 at 23:09). They are such a good side but even by their own standards, have drawn far too many games this season. They just haven’t been clinical enough in putting games to bed.

Looking at the standing of the Premier League this season, which has looked weaker than it has done for a few years now, this could be a big missed opportunity for Wolves. They are only five points outside of the top four but have drawn almost half (12 of 26) league games played in this campaign.

Sheffield United 14/1

Can the Blades round off a staggeringly brilliant season with a place in the top four? Will they be in the Champions League next season? Chris Wilder’s men, hotly tipped for relegation back down to the Championship this season, have defied odds and then some.

They are only two points behind Chelsea in the race for the fourth spot and they are still carrying some great form. They are the lowest-scoring team in the top half of the table but are second only in defence to leaders Liverpool. Will they keep chugging along and pull off the surprise of the Premier League season?

If they pull it off, hands down Sheffield United will be the success story of the season. Are they worth a flutter at 14/1?* (betting odds taken from Bet365 on February 17th, 2020 at 23:09)

Arsenal 25/1

* (betting odds taken from Bet365 on February 17th, 2020 at 23:09)

Even though the positive changes under new boss Mikel Arteta are happening, they are slow and gradual ones. Arsenal just don’t look as if they have the squad to realistically battle their way to a Champions League place. The odds of 25/1 are fully reflective of that* (betting odds taken from Bet365 on February 17th, 2020 at 23:09)

They are currently seven points away from that and with such a crowded race, that is a massive gap for them to try and make up. They are on a good unbeaten streak of form and if they start building momentum and fifth place in the league opens up, things could get interesting.
