Dutch side PSV had a great battle for the Eredivisie title last season s against rivals Ajax. They came up short by just three points did Eindhoven. So they are back for another run at the Champions League after playing in the group stage of last season’s competition. Last season they only had to come through a playoff round to reach the main stage. This season, the road is a lot longer. Their group stage campaign last season wasn’t great as they only posted a D2 L4 record in a group which featured Spurs, Barcelona and Inter Milan.
Home advantage could well be key to the settling of this tie. PSV need a big game here but their home form in Europe is not great. They are just W1 D3 L6 in their last ten games on home soil. It was a second-place finish that FC Basel collected in the Swiss top-flight last season. In their second-place finish they were 20 points behind league winners Young Boys but 25 ahead of third-placed Lugano. It wasn’t, therefore, a particularly competitive race in the end for them. Basel have a six-match undefeated streak of form going against Dutch opposition, with a W5 D1 record in that sequence.
So that should make this tie interesting. Basel lost in the second qualification round of last season’s action, going out against PAOK. Switzerland’s top flight has just opened for the new season, with Basel getting a 4-1 win over Sion. Just recently as the 2017/18 they were last sixteen finishers in the competition. Their best-ever performance in the European Cup was back in the 1973/74 season when they were losing quarter-finalist.
