Dutchman Raymond van Barneveld will be entering his PDC World Championship swansong. He’s bowing out of the PDC action following these World Championships. The 2007 champion qualified for the tournament through the Pro Tour.

That means Raymond van Barneveld has to go up in the first round of action because he is not one of the top 32 players who get a bye through to the second round. Barney will be lining up against American Darin Young in the opening round and the winner will move ahead to meet 23rd seed Jeffrey de Zwaan in the second round.
So that would be an all-Dutch clash if Van Barneveld gets through this opening challenge. He’s odds on to do so. At the last edition of the World Championships, he bowed out at the second round. He doesn’t really look as if he has the form to get much beyond a couple of matches at the Alexandra Palace. He finished bottom of the Premier League Darts first phase this season.
Barney’s one notable performance in a televised event was a quarter-final at the Grand Slam of Darts. He’s well past his best. Big Daddy Darin Young has only ever made it past the opening round of the PDC Darts World Championship once, which was back in 2010. This will be his tenth appearance at the tournament, so doesn’t exactly boast the track record to threaten too much.
Prediction
Barney is not at his sharpest but can still pull this first-round match. It may just be worth leaning on his American opponent to sneak a leg. Raymond van Barneveld 3-1 correct score.
