Another win for McCarthy's men

Republic of Ireland v Bulgaria Betting Tips – International Friendly, 10th September 19.45pm

Mick McCarthy’s Republic of Ireland take a break from UEFA European Championship qualifying on Tuesday, as the Irish entertain Krasimir Balakov’s Bulgaria at the Aviva Stadium in an international friendly. Ireland are flying high at the top of their UEFA Euro 2020 qualifying group, while the Bulgarians sit bottom of theirs. This promises to be an entertaining friendly in Dublin, but McCarthy’s men should be too strong for their visitors.

Republic of Ireland News and Form – Can the Irish extend their unbeaten run?

Republic of Ireland have been in excellent form since Mick McCarthy took over for a second time back in November last year. Under McCarthy’s management, Ireland are unbeaten in five, winning three and drawing two.

In Euro 2020 qualifying, the Republic currently sit top of Group D after five games played. Ireland have won three and drawn two to take 11 points. They are two points ahead of Denmark and three above Switzerland at the time of writing.

Last Friday night, the Irish drew 1-1 with the Swiss at the Aviva. It was a tough matchup for Ireland, with Fabian Schar’s 74th-minute goal giving the away team the lead in Dublin. However, Sheffield United’s David McGoldrick netted his first international goal with five minutes left to give Ireland an invaluable point and preserve their unbeaten record.

Ireland have really turned their fortunes around over the past year or so. In fact, since losing 1-0 at home to Wales in the UEFA Nations League back in October 2018, the Boys in Green have won three and drawn four of their following seven in all competitions. Can they extend their undefeated run to eight games with a positive result on Tuesday?

Bulgaria News and Form – Another tough test for the Lions?

Bulgaria are a team in desperate form at the moment. The Lions are without a win in almost a year, losing four and drawing four of their last eight since beating Cyprus 2-1 in the Nations League in October 2018.

In a Euro 2020 qualifying group with England, Kosovo, Czech Republic and Montenegro, the Bulgarians sit rock bottom on two points. Krasimir Balakov’s boys have really struggled to get going in Group A, drawing two and losing three of their opening five qualifiers.

Last weekend, Bulgaria fell to a heavy defeat to Gareth Southgate’s England at Wembley Stadium. Harry Kane was the Three Lions’ hero, netting a hat-trick in London. Having drawn four in a row, Bulgaria have now crashed to three consecutive defeats, which have all come in Euro 2020 qualifying.

With the pressure off, Bulgaria will be eager to get back to winning ways in Dublin on Tuesday. However, the bookies have them priced at the big odds of 9/2 to cause an upset in the Irish capital in midweek.

Republic of Ireland v Bulgaria Predictions

Republic of Ireland win: Until Kane’s opener, Bulgaria gave a good account of themselves at Wembley last weekend. However, the Bulgarians crumbled after that, going on to suffer yet another poor defeat. The Lions have really struggled over the past year or so, and they could crash to another loss in Dublin on Tuesday.

The Republic of Ireland have been excellent under McCarthy, and they have put themselves in a great position to qualify for the Euros in 2020. In-form Ireland are very strong at the Aviva Stadium in front of their home supporters, losing only one of their last seven in Dublin. I fancy the home team to prevail with ease on Tuesday, so back Ireland to win -1 at 15/8.

David McGoldrick finally scored his first goal for his country last time out, netting the all-important equaliser against the Swiss. Since leaving Portman Road, McGoldrick has enjoyed plenty of success with Sheffield United. Have a punt on the Blades man to open the scoring in this one at 4/1.
