Will Federer keep up the high levels?

Roger Federer lost the opening set of his first-round match against India’s Sumit Nagal. Federer of course then romped his way to win the next three sets to move ahead. There has been no sign of a drop in form since then. He dispatched Damir Dzumbur in the second round in straight sets then he faced Britain’s Dan Evans in the third round.

Federer was unplayable on the day, dropping just five games in the match as he blitzed his way to the fourth round. So there are just signs that he is stepping up the levels as he looks for his sixth US Open title. He hasn’t taken one title in the last decade at Flushing Meadows though. The level of competition steps up now against Belgium’s David Goffin.

Roger Federer v David Goffin Head to Head

Federer is 8-1 up in the head to head over David Goffin. The one win that Goffin managed over Federer happened at the 2017 ATP Finals. They have met twice before in Grand Slam tournaments, a round of sixteen at the 2012 French Open and a round of sixteen at the 2016 Australian Open. Federer dropped just one set in those two matches.

Can Goffin stop the Fed Express?

David Goffin came into the US Open in great form. He had just completed a run to the final of the Western & Southern Open where he lost against Daniil Medvedev. That was a massive boost of confidence for the Belgian and he has been untroubled in his US Open campaign as well.

Goffin has dropped one set so far on his way to this big fourth-round clash. He came past a trough competitor in Pablo Carreno Busta in straight sets in the third round. Goffin has made it to the fourth round in his last two appearances at the US Open but has never gone deeper than that. He has never been past the quarter-final in any Slam during his career.

Predictions

We have to roll with Federer coming up trumps in his one without too many troubles along the way. He was simply brilliant in his third-round match and although Goffin has had a bit of form behind recently, stopping Federer is a different matter entirely.

Goffin didn’t really meet anyone of note at the Western & Southern Open until Medvedev in the final. Federer 3-0 in set betting is ripe at 10/11 odds* (betting odds taken from bet365 on August 31st, 2019 at 9:48 pm). He’s probably not going to let Goffin in.
