Bookmaker Ladbrokes announced this week that just sixteen punters had placed bets on Roma to qualify from their quarter-final tie against Barcelona in the Champions League. With Barcelona holding a 3-1 advantage from the first leg, it was expected to be something of a stroll for the Catalans out in the Italian capital. It was anything but.

Roma played with a fire in their bellies, diving into tackles, constantly closing their opponents down and getting forward at every opportunity. They did the unthinkable and managed to turn the tie on its head with a 3-0 home success. Ahead of the second leg Roma were 20/1 odds at Ladbrokes to qualify for the last four and only six punters bit.

The biggest of those wagers at Ladbrokes was £30.

Jessica Bridge of Ladbrokes said: “The odds are there to be defied, and that’s exactly what Roman did. Fair play to the 16 customers out there who fancied David to take on Goliath on Tuesday evening.”
