Roma News and Form

Roma qualified in second place from Group G in the first round of action. They posted a W3 L3 record from their six games, which left them three points behind winners Real Madrid. In their two big games against the Spanish giants, Roma suffered a 3-0 and a 2-0 loss. Their other loss in the group stage was against Viktoria Plzen which means that the Italians have lost back to back games in the competition.

Last season Roma ran to the semifinals where there were stopped by Liverpool. Roma have a record of W3 L3 in the round of sixteen ties. At this stage of last season, they edged out Shakhtar Donetsk, their second leg win in that tie snapping a five-match losing streak they were on in round of sixteen matches. Roma are W3 L3 in six previous knockout ties against Portuguese opposition. Their overall record against Portuguese teams is W5 D4 L2. Roma have won eight of their last 16 home matches in the UEFA Champions League (including qualifying).

Porto News and Form

Porto bowed out of last season’s round of sixteen 5-0 on aggregate against Liverpool. They hold a poor W3 L7 record from ten previous ties at this stage of the competition. They have only taken the one win in their last five ties. This is the third season on the bounce where they have reached this stage, but have failed to get to the quarterfinals since the 2014/15 season. So it’s not been great from them at this stage of the competition, but they have a W5 L4 record in two-legged ties against Italian sides in Europe.

Porto knocked out Roma in the 1981/82 European Cup Winners’ Cup and then produced a 4-1 aggregate win over them in the 2016/17 Champions League playoffs. Porto have gone on a five-match unbeaten run of European form in the Champions League away from home (W2 D3). If you look a little deeper they have only won three of their last nine European away games (D4 L2) though. They did produce some fantastic form in the group stage, winning their last five games on the bounce to top their section. They tallied up sixteen points in the group stage, the highest of all teams.

Roma v Porto Predictions

Roma to win: Porto don’t look as if they are going to be a pushover in this one by any stretch of the imagination. Roma’s run last season to the semifinals was them punching above their weight. Porto may be able to get out by avoiding defeat in this one.
