Into the second round of the Masters, we go and this is actually the quarter-final stage as it’s such a small tournament. First up on the board is the all time-tournament leader Ronnie O’Sullivan who had an easy time of things in the first round. His opponent in the last eight is Ryan Day who knocked out a top seed in his opening match.

Despite stating that he was a bit tired at times during his opening match of the 2019 Masters, Ronnie O’Sullivan took a 6-2 in over Stuart Bingham to ease through to the quarterfinals. It was an expected win and at times when he was dialled-in he looked at ease and at his comfortable best overall. The next challenge for him comes in the form of Welshman Ryan Day.

It has been a while since the two met. Their last coming together was back at the 2016 Championship League with O’Sullivan taking a 3-2 victory. Their last actual tournament meeting was all the way back at the 2011 China Open when there was an upset on the cards with Day collecting a 5-2 victory in the match.

The overall head to head across all tournaments between the two stands in favour of O’Sullivan at 5-2. They have contested 60 frames between them and O’Sullivan has won 34 of those. O’Sullivan and Day have never met in the Masters before.

Day was the underdog for his first round match against fifth seed John Higgins. After falling behind 3-1 it looked as if the outcome was going true to form. But Day produced a great fightback taking the match to a deciding frame to make his way through. Day actually won a few titles last season and while he has yet to record one for 2018/19 season he has made the quarterfinals of four of the last six events for the season.

Day reached the quarterfinals of last season’s Masters, equaling his best ever finish at the tournament. That was after a big absence of seven straight seasons without having managed to qualify for the invitational event.

Prediction

It is O’Sullivan for us. It’s one of those rare occasions now in the Masters where we see two players going up against each other who actually haven’t got a lot of history between them. O’Sullivan, if well rested, can deliver on a -2.5 handicap at 8/13 odds* (betting odds taken from bet365 on January 15th, 2019 at 9:08 pm)
