Rosehill Golden Slipper: William Hill offer 5/2 racing odds on Farnan – 21st March 2020

Enthralling Golden Slipper contest ahead as Tagaloa and Farnan battle again

Horse Racing Betting

This one gets under starters orders at 05.30 GMT on Saturday, March 21st. So it’s one to plan for. The Rosehill Golden Slipper is the richest race in the world for 2-year-old thoroughbreds.

So this battle of the juveniles and it’s a big one.

There’s an AUD $3.5 million purse on the Golden Slipper 2020.

Golden Slipper 2020 Race Info

The track is a right-handed D shaped course and so the draw from the gate is hugely important. The lower the number the better because that means getting the boost of the inside track from the off instead of having to work across the course.

Distance: 6f
Group One: restricted to 2-year-olds

This year’s event is going off behind closed doors, so the atmosphere will be missing. But at least the fixture is going ahead. There has been a closely-ran thing at the head of the market in Golden Slipper betting as well between Tagaloa and Farnan.

Tagaloa v Farnan

There is joint favouritism at 7/2 between Tagaloa and Farnan in Golden Slipper 2020 betting* (betting odds taken from William Hill at 04:41 GMT on Friday 20th March 2020).

Tagaloa is going off in his sixth run and he was the Blue Diamond winner when he scored at 25/1 in February.

But then, and why this year’s Golden Slipper is so fascinating, he faced Farnan at Randwick in the Todman Stakes in early March and lost. So connections will be looking to turn the tables as they step up against the challenger again.

Farran beat Tagaloa by almost two lengths in the 6f contest at Randwick, which is the same distance as the Slipper. Farnan has won his last two runs since Hugh Bowman jumped in the saddle.

He had been the 4/5 favourite for the Todman Stakes. Before that, he won the Silver Slipper Stakes in late-February.

Is there much to choose between them? No. Are we set for a fascinating contest? Yes.

Farnan has drifted a little in the market having taken a wide draw of 14, while Tagaloa goes from gate 6.

But then Farnan is trained by Gai Waterhouse who is the joint-record holder for most Golden Slipper wins. And you can’t dismiss the wins he took in the two lead-ups (Silver Slipper and Todman Stakes).

However, following that first win for Tagalog, punters have been warming to the Blue Diamond winner.

Away Game
14/1

William Hill

Hanseatic

Hanseatic will be expected to be in the picture and if anyone is likely to muscle in on the joint-favourites it is him. He won his first three races but then put his undefeated record on the line in that Caulfied meeting.

in the Blue Diamond Stakes battle he lost out to Tagaloa. It is hard not to picture him being back in the frame after that runners up spot at the Blue Diamond. He goes from nine and after being freshened up in a trial he ticks a lot of boxes to upset the joint-favourites from 11/2.

Minhaaj

Minhaaj goes from stall 13 in what will be just the third race for the charge. She won her first two outings, the most recent of which was in early March at Flemington with a four and a half-length success over Muntaseera who lines up in the Golden Slipper. She’s stepping up in the company here, but the potential is there.

Golden Slipper Tips 2020

  • Outright Pick: Hanseatic
  • Place Contention: Away Game and Dame Giselle
  • E/W Outsider Pick: Mildred

Hungry Heart

Hungry Heart, who is an offspring of the great Frankel, noticed her first win in her last trip. That was at Randwick in late February as she took a three-quarter length victory over Stellar Pauline in a Group 2 stakes against her sex.

That was at the 6f furlong and Hungry Heart seems to have plenty to stay on with. Huge room for improvement still which is fantastic. Throw in a fantastic draw from five, she has every chance.

Away Game

Away Game comes in at 14/1 and is our outside pick in Golden Slipper 2020 betting* (betting odds taken from William Hill at 04:41 GMT on Friday 20th March 2020). The filly has taken a win in three of her five starts and the notable effort there was a success in the Magic Millions at Gold Coast.

She was highly competitive as well in the Blue Diamond, taking fourth behind Tagaloa, but only a length and halfback of the winner. There could be more to come and can be well in the mix from stall 3.

Worthy Mentions

Dame Giselle is likely to be in the thick of things as well from four. She edged See You Soon by a short head at Randwick in early March as the 21/10 favourite in the race. That was her second score in just the fourth outing. She just stuck in there for that win on what was her first trip at 6f.

See You Soon as mentioned above, was narrowly beaten by Dame Giselle at Randwick earlier this month. He has been up against her in all three of his races, beating her in the first effort and then losing back to back.

However, like Dame Giselle, there is plenty of room for improvement. They met at Rosehill in November last year in the Golden Gift (Conditions) and See You Soon was almost four lengths back of Dame Giselle in second.

For Mildred, the gate is all wrong at 17. But she has been putting together some very good work. She opened the year with a victory but it has been back to back third places from her since.

The most recent one of those for Mildred was behind Dame Giselle at Randwick in early March, but only by half a length. At a 50/1 poke, she’s easily worth an easy way risk* (betting odds taken from William Hill at 04:41 GMT on Friday 20th March 2020)

Predictions & Tips

What a field. What a race. At the top, there is FARNAN who has only been toppled once. But that, of course, was by TAGALOA. The two make for such an interesting battle and the former has a lot more to do from such a wide draw.

HANSEATIC just missed out on the Blue Diamond, but pushed the line hard, perhaps leaving his charge too late. He is likely to be right in play after a recent trial win as well at Randwick. We can’t pass on his appeal to take on the joint-favourites and the Godolphin charge has been freshened up and looks ready.

As mentioned in our Golden Slipper 2020 betting preview, we are taking AWAY GAME as our outsider pick. There looks to be enough in her after a very competitive run in the Blue Diamond to get into the frame with a fantastic chance in a low draw.

There is no reason why DAME GISELLE can’t have a say in place-contention matters either, she has wonderful grit and steel about her and is stacked with promise having taken a tough route to the Golden Slipper.

Out big outside hopes of each way all rest on Mildred. It would have been fascinating to see how she would have lined up in the market had she gotten a single-figure draw. She’s out at 17, a horrible place, but could be game.
