Celtic to survive out in Trondheim

Champions League Betting

Rosenborg v Celtic Betting Preview – UEFA Champions League 1st August 7.45pm

Rosenborg have some work to do as they suffered a 3-1 defeat at Celtic Park in the first leg of this Champions League qualifier. But what will give them a bit of hope is that they did manage to get an away goal on the board. So the minimum that they will need out of this is a 2-0 win. But Celtic have looked pretty solid and strong so far in their qualification work and they just have to find a way to survive this road trip and drive on through to the next round.

Rosenborg News and Form

Despite their disruptions before the game, where their head coach was sacked much to the chagrin of their disgruntled players, Rosenberg started the better of the two in the first leg. They were really solid through the opening 15 minutes of this content and they got the opening goal of the tie as well. The Norwegian Champions couldn’t sustain their bright start but there did appear to be enough between the two sides in that first leg to warrant backing both teams to score at 8/11 odds for the second leg* (Betting Odds were taken from July 28th, 2018 at 10:43 p.m.). So they do have an away goal, but they have to come forward and look for more in this one which could leave them vulnerable. They are well into their domestic season so they are match sharp unlike Celtic who are technically still in their pre-season. The Norwegians are W4 L4 in their last eight games, and they have only taken the one loss on home soil in all competitions this term. Rosenborg lost the first leg of their first qualifying round tie against Valur away from home and then turned it around on home soil.

Celtic News and Form

Celtic’s defence was terrible early on in that first leg on home soil, but Brendan Rodgers wasn’t afraid to switch his tactics up front actually to ease some pressure off themselves by getting on the ball on more. So that settled down the Scottish Champions and it was Odsonne Edouard who was the big star of the night with a brace for Celtic. So that’s three goals in three Champions League games this season for Edouard. Worth a look in the anytime goalscorer market then. Celtic created plenty of chances in the game after their ropey start, Rodgers saying afterwards that they could have had five or six and to be fair they were easily the stronger of the two sides as the game wore on. They are just going to likely need to stay focused at the back early out in Trondheim and take any sting out of a potential comeback from Rosenborg. They have a good advantage in the tie now with that 3-1 lead and going forward they should be able to open up the defence of the Norwegians if they need to. Celtic recorded a 3-0 win on the road against Alashkert in the last round, winning the tie 6-0 on aggregate. They should be good enough to handle themselves in this fixture.

Rosenborg v Celtic Head to Head

These two are no strangers to each other as this will be the eighth meeting between them and Celtic hold a W5 D1 L1 record from those. Celtic’s record out at Rosenborg is W2 L1. The last time they were there was in last season’s qualifiers and took a 1-0 win there. Both teams have scored in just one of the last five meetings between the two clubs. The winners meet AEK Athens in the third qualifying round and whoever is eliminated faces Cork City in the Europa League third qualifying round.

Rosenborg v Celtic Predictions

We don’t see Celtic tripping up in this one as they have looked strong so far and had an edge overall in the first leg. They just have to manage themselves and try to be a bit sharper at the back than they were in that first leg because they were shaky at times. We are backing the draw in the match outright.
