Rotherham v Shrewsbury Betting Preview – League One 27th May 3.00pm

The huge prize of a place in the Championship next season awaits the winner of this match at Wembley on Sunday. Rotherham impressed in their semi final success against Scunthorpe to get through to the final. If the Millers can win this it will give them an immediate return to the second tier. Shrewsbury though showed a bit of character in overcoming some poor end of season form to scrap their way past the tough challenge of Charlton in their play off semi final.

Rotherham News and Form

Rotherham carried some good form through to the end of the season and they will go into the weekend’s league one play-off final with five wins in their last seven games (D2 L1). So the Millers are going well and the only defeat that they suffered in that seven-game sequence was because Plymouth scored a 90th minute penalty against them at the end of April to win 2-1. So overall you can’t fault the form of Rotherham, who have scored in all but one of their last six games. It was all doom and gloom at the end of the 2016/17 season when they were relegated from the Championship but now find themselves in a position of being able to bounce straight back up. They faced up to Scunthorpe in the play-off semi finals and the Millers came through with flying colours with a 4-2 aggregate success. The Millers, given their home form always looked strong enough to win through that tie. At the end of the regular season rather finished fourth and a distant eight points behind third-placed Shrewsbury. The difference between the two sides is that Rotherham will carry much better form than their play-off final opponents. As Rotherham have taken a clean sheet in five of their last seven games played then both teams not to score at bet365 is at 10/11 odds* (Betting Odds taken at 4:46 a.m. on May 23rd, 2018).

Shrewsbury News and Form

Shrewsbury were right in the mix for automatic promotion up to the Championship this season, battling well alongside Wigan the (the two did get automatically promoted). But then thir challenge started to fall away around March and the Shrews started to lose touch with the other two. They did manage to secure third place and comfortably so, but they only won one of their last six games at the end of the regular season. So going into their play-off semi-final against Charlton, Shrewsbury looked a little bit vulnerable. However they shook off their end of season disappointments and produced a couple of dogged displays to get a 2-0 aggregate win over the Addicks. The damage was done in the first leg when the Shrews were out on the road and Jon Nolan popped up in the 80th minute with a stunning strike to give them 1-0 lead in the tie. So even though they got their back-to-back one-nil wins over Charlton, their overall form is still a bit in question. Shrewsbury don’t look anywhere near as confident, or consistent as Rotherham, and they are likely going to need this to be a low scoring game if they are to progress. Under 2.5 goals at bet365 for the final is at 4/6 odds* (Betting Odds taken at 4:46 a.m. on May 23rd, 2018).

Rotherham v Shrewsbury Head to Head

Rotherham and Shrewsbury traded away wins this season against each other in League One action. That was the first meetings in the league between them since they were last together in League One which was back in the 2013/14 season. In the last six league games between the two sides it is all even at two wins each and two drawn matches. Five of the last six meetings between the two clubs in all competitions have ended over 2.5 goals.

Rotherham 5/4, Draw 23/10, Shrewsbury 11/5* (Betting Odds taken at 4:46 a.m. on May 23rd, 2018)

Rotherham v Shrewsbury Predictions

Rotherham can get themselves back up to the Championship by winning this fixture. They look the more confident and consistent of the two finalists and they just look so hard to get the better of at the moment. Shrewsbury did a great job in the play offs after going into them with no form, but will likely face too tough of a challenge in this one.
