Salford City News and Form – Can the Ammies cause a huge upset?
What a rise Salford City have been on over the last few years. Backed by several of Manchester United’s ‘Class of 92’, the Ammies have secured a number of promotions in recent times. They now find themselves in the Football League for the first very time in their 79-year history.
Salford finished the National League in third spot last term, setting up a play-off semi-final with Eastleigh. City won on penalties to earn their place in the play-off final against Fylde. Alexander’s men were excellent at Wembley Stadium, with goals from Emmanuel Dieseruvwe, Carl Piergianni and Ibou Touray sealing a comfortable 3-0 win.
Salford got their League Two campaign off to the perfect start, beating Stevenage 2-0 at Moor Lane. Dieseruvwe’s was City’s hero, netting twice, which were Salford’s first Football League goals. Unfortunately for Alexander’s boys, they were bought back down to earth with a bang at Crawley Town last Saturday, losing 2-0 at Broadfield Stadium.
The Salford faithful will relish Tuesday’s clash with the mighty Leeds at Moor Lane. But have they got it in them to cause an almighty upset?

Leeds United are the favourites to win the Championship title, but the Whites dropped two points against Nottingham Forest at Elland Road last time out. United looked to be on their way to another three points, but a late goal from Lewis Grabban gave Forest a deserved point in the 1-1 draw.
Prior to Saturday’s stalemate, Leeds kicked off their league season with a convincing win against Bristol City. United were superb at Ashton Gate, with Pablo Hernandez, Patrick Bamford and Jack Harrison on the scoresheet in the 3-1 victory.
Leeds were knocked out by Preston North End in the second round of this competition last term, which was Bielsa’s first defeat as United boss. Promotion to the Premier League will be number one priority for the Yorkshire club, but Leeds are capable of going on a good run in this tournament this season.
Leeds will be desperate to avoid a cup upset on Tuesday. In truth, the Championship side should have too much quality for their fourth-tier opponents at Moor Lane.

Leeds United win: Bielsa’s troops were very impressive on the road in the Championship last season, winning 11 of their 23 away fixtures. Meanwhile, only Norwich City (45), Sheffield United (40) – who were both promoted to the Premier League – and Bristol City (38) picked up more than United’s 37 away points. Leeds also started this season with an away victory at Ashton Gate. This will be a great occasion for everyone involved with Salford, and the hosts will do their best to make life difficult for the Championship side. However, my money is going on Leeds to win -1 at 11/8.
United midfielder Pablo Hernandez has made an outstanding start to his season. The Spaniard, who is widely regarded as one of the best players outside of the Premier League, has scored in both league games so far this term. Have a punt on Hernandez to net anytime on Tuesday at 13/8.
