Sam Stosur v Caroline Wozniacki Preview – 28th August 2018

The 2018 Australian Open champion Caroline Wozniacki has a favourable draw ahead of her down in the bottom half of the US Open. The Dane is the second seed at the tournament which puts her down in the eighth section and the highest seed that she could come up in the fourth round would be 13th seed Kiki Bertens.

Wozniacki is going to have to be dialled in with her focus right out of the gates though because she has a tough competitor in the first round to face. Wozniacki goes up against the 2011 US Open champion Sam Stosur. Australia’s Stosur hasn’t been on the radar at all since 2013 at the US Open, only having made it to the fourth round once there.

Stosur is unseeded and that is why she has to go up against Wozniacki. The Australian is ranked 64th in the world and last week at New Haven had to go through three rounds of qualifying before losing to Aryna Sabalenka in the first round proper. She carries with her just a 22/24 match record for the season which is up against the 32/12 record of Wozniacki.

Wozniacki leads head to head

But the head to head between Wozniacki and Stosur is tight with Wozniacki 7-5 ahead and the Dane won the last meeting which was back in 2016 in China. The two have never met at a Grand Slam before but things are even with two wins each between them on hard court surfaces. Over 2.5 sets on the game at 12/5 is just worth a flutter we feel* (betting odds take on August 27th, 2018 at 11:03 pm).

Wozniacki does have two titles to her name this season but her form since winning at Eastbourne really has been poor. She lost in the second round at Wimbledon and then her opening matches at both Montreal and Cincinnati on hard court. So that will be a bit of a worry for her and she had to pull out of her Cincinnati duel with Kiki Bertens after losing the first set. So even though she is favourite she could find herself in a scrap in the first round.

Wozniacki has been to the Final of the US Open twice in her career in 2009 and in 2014, while she has also banked three semi final appearances on top of that, the most recent was just two years ago. Of the four Slams, only her win percentage at the Australian Open is better than her career record at the US Open and that’s by 0.10% after winning Melbourne this year.

Predictions

We haven’t seen the best out of Caroline Wozniacki over the second half of the season which suggests she is running out of steam. Her recent withdrawal in Cincinnati stacks up against her too. But Stosur is a long way from the top of her game and is on the downhill path to retirement. We see Wozniacki getting through the match, but could easily drop a set. A Wozniacki 2-1 Set Betting option is at 3/1 odds* (betting odds take on August 27th, 2018 at 11:03 pm).
