Shan Blue a big threat to the favourite

SHAN BLUE is one of, if not the best novice chasers around in terms of jumping ability.

It has been three straight wins for him this season, so he will be putting his undefeated record over the fences on the line in this one.

The most recent victory that Shan Blue recorded was at the Grade 1 Kauto Star Novices’ Chase at Kempton 42 days ago.

Again on display was the great jumping form of Shan Blue in that one.

There is a cut in trip for him in this one, but that shouldn’t throw him off his game.

Dame De Compagnie to follow up on positive opener?

Nicky Henderson’s DAME DU COMPAGNIE is one to watch in the field as well. Back at the Cheltenham Festival last year she scored a victory in the Coral Cup.

After a 10-month break, she came back and delivered a comfortable win at Ayr over a 2m trip last month in some heavy conditions.

That was a 9l margin of victory that she took over Cornerstone Lad.

There is extra on the trip for Dame Du Compagnie to deal with in this one, but she receives weight here and could have some pretty strong place claims as she looks to secure a double.

Can Messire Des Obeaux push on from promising chase debut?

On his chasing debut, he opened with a win at Wincanton in a handicap with another bold effort back at the same venue.

The rest of the runners

PAINT THE DREAM has had a good season under his belt so far. After some good hurdling form, he finally got it right over the fences on his last effort.

That was a score at Newbury 39 days ago. He made it all in the race and it’ll be interesting to see if he can kick on.

SPORTING JOHN had a really good time last season.

But he was disappointing on his latest run, making his chasing bow at Exeter three months ago.

He was third there, but a distant third place finishes and will have something to prove.

UP THE STRAIGHT may be trying to punch above his weight in this one.

He claimed a second at Fontwell just 23 days ago. But this is such a big step up in the level of competition that he faces, it’s going to be a big ask.

This is a great race and we are going to make SHAN BLUE our pick at 5/2* (betting odds recorded at 22:10 GMT on Friday, 5th February 2021 at William Hill).

There are few novice chasers around that are better than him and because we expect this to be a tight battle between him and Hitman, it may come down to small margins in jumping ability.

In that regard, we think that it is Shan Blue who just takes it and the drop in trip may well suit him perfectly for this test.

With all that said, we expect HITMAN to be right in the frame as well after his excellent runner up in the Henry VIII.

Filling out the shortlist will be DAME DE COMPAGNIE who showed quite a great deal of promise on that recent score at Ayr after a long absence.

So the mare may be able to build on that.
