Schalke have gone out at this stage in each of their last three Champions League campaigns. It is going to be so important for them to try and build a lead in this. In the group stage this season, Schalke finished runners-up to Porto. This will be the fourth match between Schalke and Manchester City, with the Citizens holding a W2 L1 record from those three previous games. This is the first time that Schalke have been back to the round of sixteen in the UEFA Champions League since the 2014/15 season.

From their five previous visits to this stage of the tournament, Schalke have won two of those ties. On both occasions that they did make it through through, they had won their home leg. In this season’s group, stage Schalke were undefeated at home with a W2 D1 record. Those two wins were both with a clean sheet too.

In their last eight Champions League home games Schalke hold a W3 D2 L3 record. In that sequence of matches, they have conceded 18 goals. But in their last nine European games in all competitions, they are at W6D3 in Gelsenkirchen. Schalke are winless in five against English sides, losing three of those. Their last game at home against an English side ended in a 5-0 defeat against Chelsea.

Manchester City News and Form

Manchester City lost their opening group stage fixture against Lyon in a shock upset. But the Citizens had more than enough about them to still go and win the section. This is the sixth consecutive season that the English side have been through to the round of sixteen. They have prevailed in just two of their five previous visits. Last season they collected an away win at Basel in the round of sixteen, just their second win in five away matches at this stage. They have lost three of their five previous away matches in the round of 16.

Manchester city were up against German opposition in the group stage as they faced Hoffenheim. City came up a really spirited opponent in those games, but the English side still edged both games 2-1. Manchester City have posted a W6 D1 record in their last seven games against German opposition. They have failed in their two previous two-legged ties against German sides though in European action. The Citizens have won just five of their last 11 European matches, home and away. That won’t stop them being heavy favourites here.

Schalke v Manchester City Predictions

Man City to win: You would have to roll with the Citizens opening up an advantage in this tie in the first leg. Given their record it’s worth backing both teams to score in the fixture, but still for the English champions to come out on top.
