There are four Group 1 races at Randwick in Australia this weekend.

The Longines Queen Elizabeth Stakes is the most valuable race on the card and features a British runner in the shape of recent Ranvet Stakes winner Addeybb, trained by William Haggas. But the Newmarket handler also has an entry in the Schweppes Sydney Cup, which probably has an even better chance.

Sydney Cup History

The Sydney Cup is one of the few two-mile races in Australia still run at the highest level. First run in 1866, the Sydney Cup is run over two miles under handicap conditions at Randwick.

Few mares have been successful in this Group 1 but Jessicabeel triumphed in 2010 and the brilliant Makybe Diva took the honours six years earlier.
Tie The Knot was the last three-year-old to win in 1998 but none of that age group have stood their ground this year in the million-dollar contest.

The Chairman’s Handicap at Randwick has probably been the best trial for this race down the years having produced 12 of the last 25 winners. However, it is also worth noting form from the Tancred (BMW) Stakes.

Four horses have completed the Melbourne Cup-Sydney Cup double in the same same season – Lord Cardigan (1903-04), Straight Draw (1957-58), Galilee (1966-67), Makybe Diva (2003-04). County Tyrone and Who Shot Thebarman both ran in six Sydney Cups, winning once, though the latter’s tally included a voided race in 2017.
Polarisation, owned by Godolphin and trained by Charlie Appleby won that voided race and, amazingly, also the re-run a few days later.

Only one winner since 2000 has carried more than 8st 11lb.

Sydney Cup Predictions

Young Rascal is the only official British challenger but not the only one with connections to Britain and Ireland.
William Haggas’ raider won the Iron Jack N E Manion Cup at Rosehill last month but is only a best 13/8 with Unibet. However, he did beat The Chosen One, Raheen House, Sweet Thomas and Yogi, though Group 3 victories have been the ceiling of his achievements so far.
Raheen House (7/1 with Bet365) won a Listed race in the UK when trained by Brian Meehan. He also spent time at the Haggas stable, though has arguably never fulfilled his potential.
Mustajeer (9/2 with Unibet) won the Ebor Handicap at York last year when trained by Ger Lyons. The seven-year-old has done well since joining Kris Lees but not many win this carrying more than 9st.
AZURO ran well in a couple of hot handicaps at Flemington at the end of last year. He was just behind Etah James in the Group Barfoot & Thompson Auckland Cup in New Zealand on his reappearance but carried overweight and will be a lot fitter for this. Glynn Schofield’s mount may prove the pick of his stable’s three runners and is overpriced at 25/1 with Bet365 for punters looking for a value each-way bet.
