Scotland News and Form

Can Scotland pick themselves up after their midweek misery which has seen them draw a tremendous amount of criticism? Their performance was pretty abject as they faced Israel, made worse by the fact they threw the game away after having been 1-0 up at halftime. Against the run of play, Scotland got the lead from the penalty spot.

But then in the second half it just got worse. Israel were, head and shoulders, the better of the two sides and Scotland were reduced to ten men after being pegged back at 1-1 which allowed the hosts an easier opportunity to get the points. That is what they did, inflicting a 2-1 defeat on the Scots. Israel had won just two home games in four years before that.

To be fair, Israel deservedly got the win and were much the better side and creating chances even when it was 11 v 11. The loss for Scotland was made worse because they had beaten Albania in their Nations League group opener, lifting their spirits and a win in Israel would have given them total control of their group.

Scotland have won only two of their last nine games (D2 L6). They have scored in back to back games going into this one but were on a run of scoring in just one of six before that. Both teams not to score in this friendly appeals at 8/11 as the Scots may struggle against Portugal* (betting odds taken on October 12th, 2018 at 5:56 pm).

Portugal News and Form

Portugal have been positive recently having put a good W2 D1 record on the board in their last three games. They have beaten both Italy and Poland in their two Nations league games so far. They fell behind out in Poland in midweek but recovered to post a good 3-2 win for themselves in the game. That was without Cristiano Ronaldo who has once again taken a pass on international duty. Andre Silva is worth a look in the anytime goalscorer market as he has netted in Portugal’s last two fixtures so the AC Milan man is in form.

Portugal, with or without Ronaldo are a very difficult side to beat. They have only lost one of their last ten games now (W4 D5 L1) and since September last year, they have only lost the two fixtures. They have only the two clean sheets in their last six games, but Scotland don’t raise much of an attacking threat. Portugal to win to nil at is going to have a lot of appeal for punters at 15/8 odds* (betting odds taken on October 12th, 2018 at 5:56 pm). The game ending under 2.5 goals will have decent appeal as well as the Scots may struggle offensively against the visitors.

Scotland v Portugal Head to Head

This is the first time that these two have met since November 2002 with Portugal taking a 2-0 win on that occasion. The Portuguese are on a five-match undefeated streak of form against Scotland, winning three of those. They have conceded just one goal in their last five against the Scots as well. Scotland’s home form against Portugal is it bad though as they are W3 D2 L0 in their last five on home soil against Portugal.

Scotland v Portugal Predictions

Portugal to win: Portugal may not even be at full strength, but we still see them picking off the Scots. The Scottish players looked as if they hadn’t met each other before out on the pitch in Israel. Away win.
