Senegal News and Form

Senegal have made it one step closer to winning their first-ever Africa Cup of Nations title. They were involved in a dramatic and tense semifinal against Tunisia. Senegal, aka the Lions of Teranga, got the only goal of the game through a Tunisian own goal in the 100th minute of the fixture. Their previous best effort in the competition was a semi-final exit against Cameroon in 2002. Senegal were the better side of the two against Tunisia and Liverpool’s Sadio Mane even missed an open goal in the first half.

Mane didn’t have a good game at all, it largely passed him by and he was anonymous. He has netted three times in tournament so far though making him Senegal’s top scorer. There was big drama in the semi-final when they gave away a second-half penalty, but Tunisia took a dreadful spot-kick. Four minutes later Senegal missed a penalty of their own, dragging the whole affair to extra time. Their semi-final win did come at a cost though because captain Kalidou Koulibaly who gave away Senegal’s penalty in the semi-final is suspended. Will, that proves to be costly?

Having already lost to Algeria in this tournament, will they be able to exact some revenge? Senegal are W10 D2 L1 in their last thirteen games and have been rock solid in defence. They have not conceded at all in their road to the final and have shipped in just two of their last dozen fixtures. Counting extra time, each for their last three games at the Africa Cup of Nations 2019 Senegal have won by a 1-0 scoreline only.

Algeria News and Form

Algeria won all three of their group stage games which includes their 1-0 success over Senegal. They were up against Nigeria in the semi-finals. Algeria had taken the lead in the game through an own goal from William Troost-Ekong had given Algeria the lead in the game. But when they conceded a penalty just after the 70-minute mark, the Desert Foxes looked to have blown a golden chance at wrapping up a place in the final. However, Manchester City’s Riyad Mahrez had something special up his sleeve.

Mahrez curled a sublime free-kick into the top corner of the net in the fifth minute of stoppage time at the end of regulation. Algeria were the better of the two sides in the fixture and their success was pretty well deserved as the Super Eagles were only a threat on the counter-attack against them. The goal from Mahrez moved him on to three goals for the tournament, alongside teammate Adam Ounas. Baghdad Bounedjah had plenty of chances in the semi to have joined Mahrez on Ounas on three (he has one tournament goal).

Given what Algeria have produced so far in the tournament compared to Senegal, the Desert Foxes look to have an advantage in the creative attacking department. They are in great form as well are the Algerians with an undefeated eleven match run of form going at the moment (W9 D). They have won their last six on the bounce. The Desert Foxes have conceded just one goal in the tournament. Given that Senegal have conceded none, this final is likely to be tight. Algeria have scored at least two goals in five of their last six fixtures now.

Senegal v Algeria Tips & Odds

Senegal v Algeria Predictions

Algeria to win: The Algerians have been far more convincing going forward in this tournament than what Senegal have been. But the defensive record of Senegal speaks for itself really so this is probably going to be tight. But the craft of Algeria is there to sneak a narrow win.
