Serena Williams v Naomi Osaka Preview – 9th September 2018

There is just no substitute for class. Serena Williams has powered her way back to another US Open final after seeing off Anastasija Sevastova in quick time in their semi-final duel. So Williams stands on the brink of creating more history, just a year after her life was in danger after giving birth. She will take on Naomi Osaka who has created history at this tournament as she will be stepping out in her first ever Grand Slam Final.

Serena Williams v Naomi Osaka Odds

Serena Williams 1/3
Naomi Osaka 12/5

There is a lot of humility in the words that Serena Williams offers. She says she is just happy to be playing and enjoying every day as it comes no matter what. But deep down you can’t help but feel that she probably won’t be expecting to lose on Sunday in the final of the US Open 2018. She is the 1/3 odds-on favourite * (betting odds taken on September 7th, 2018 at 5:30 am) to earn what would be her 24th Grand Slam title, equalling the record haul of Margaret Court.

This is the 31st Grand Slam Final for Williams but she did get to the final of Wimbledon this year and was upset by Angelique Kerber there. She had lost on her last two sem ifinal appearances at Flushing Meadows so at least she is back over that hurdle and this is her first appearance in the US Open final since beating Caroline Wozniacki in 2014. If Williams does win on Sunday when she will become that all-time leader in women’s singles titles at the US Open with seven.

Williams back to her best?

Is Williams back to her best? Pretty close it has to be said. She beat her sister Venus in dominant fashion in the third round and then took down eighth seed Karolina Pliskova in the quarter finals. That was an important match for Williams against such as a strong contender. Then it was Anastasija Sevastova in the semi-finals who Williams took out in just 66 minutes. A Williams 2-0 in set betting is at 10/11 odds* (betting odds taken on September 7th, 2018 at 5:30 am).

Osaka is the first ever player from Japan to reach a Grand Slam final as she took out last year’s losing finalist Madison Keys in the semi-finals. That was her first win over the American but it was a comfortably won 6-2 6-4 for Osaka. The 20-year-old is the 20th seed at the US Open this season and this is the first time that she has been past the third round there. She had a major career breakthrough this year in winning her first WTA title at Indian Wells.

Then a week later she beat Williams in Miami.

The clash between Williams and Osaka in Miami is the only previous meeting between the two. Osaka won the clash in straight sets 6-3 6-2 as well and she has shown this year just what a tremendous future she has in the game. She looked composed in her semi-final fighting off key breakpoints and when she was serving for the match. But taking down Serena Williams in your first ever Grand Slam Final can’t be an easy thing to pull off.

Prediction

This is where Williams thrives and she is looking back somewhere near her peak. She is the favourite and we are going to back her in straight sets for the win. She has had a couple of slow starts to matches in the last few rounds, but we can see her doing enough against a player who is bound to be a little nervy on her first Slam Final appearance.
