Simona Halep v Johanna Konta Wimbledon Odds – July 11th, 2017

Konta's Wimbledon run under threat by Halep

Tennis Betting

After another epic battle in this season’s Wimbledon campaign, Johanna Konta is through to the quarter finals of the Grand Slam. Her second round match against Donna Vekic will long stand out in memory as one of the great Wimbledon matches played, but it was an exhausting affair and she had another extended match on Monday at SW19 as she needed three sets to get past young French challenger Caroline Garcia.

With the head to head between Konta and Garcia at 2-2, that was never going to be an easy game for Konta at all. But Konta stuck in there, got through her struggles and managed to put the win on the board, so at least that speaks to the depth and fight that she has in her. But now the opposition steps up a level as she will take on Romanian second seed Simona Halep who has her eye on her first Grand Slam title and the world number one spot.

With current world number one Angelique Kerber losing out in the fourth round to Garbine Muguruza, there is a big incentive for Halep to push forward. Halep was good in her fourth round match against Victoria Azarenka, and Halep, who lost the final of the French Open recently to young Jelena Ostapenko, you would imagine that her mindset is to make amends for that shock defeat. She has looked pretty sharp at Wimbledon so far and clearly, isn’t suffering any kind of dip in confidence.

Halep is a tough cookie. She hits hard and will offer up a lot of resistance in defence. This should be another tough game for Konta and you would have to expect three sets to come up in this one which can be backed at 11/8 at Bet365. The margins should be pretty tight in this one and it is Konta who holds a 2-0 lead in the head to head against Simona Halep, but both of those previous meetings were over three sets.

The two were together just this season with Konta fighting back from having dropped the first set against Halep in the Miami quarter finals. Their first clash happened back in 2015 when Konta took the deciding set 7-5. There is nothing between them really of note in their respective win/loss records for the season and in the Set Betting market, you are looking at a price of around 3/1 at bet365 on either one of them coming through with a 2-1 victory.

Our prediction would be run with Halep in this one. The Romanian made pretty light work of Azarenka, winning in straight sets, which was in huge contrast to the struggles that Konta had against the scrappy Garcia. Another long match for Konta could well work against her in this one in having to go into action on back to back days. Halep is looking sharp in both offence and defence and will be there to punish Konta if the Brit’s forehead starts deserting her like it did against Garcia. Halep to win 2-1 in set betting looks good value.
