Selby to shine at The Crucible

Snooker Betting

The final ranking tournament of the snooker season gets underway on April 16th. The Snooker World Championship 2016 is the crowning jewel of the season and one of the most prestigious and famous titles that can be won in the sport. The hype in last season’s tournament was all about Ronnie O’Sullivan but he was dumped out of the competition from eventual winner Stuart Bingham.

So Bingham will be the one out for a title defence at the Crucible in the Snooker World Championship 2016. He showed a bit of from in going to the final of the World Grand Prix in March, but he missed out there to Shaun Murphy and hasn’t followed up his World Championship title from last season with a ranking event win this term.

So that has left Stuart Bingham down the pecking order when it comes to the outright winner market for Snooker World Championship 2016 betting at a price of 28/1. Heading up the market is Ronnie O’Sullivan who is looking for his sixth World Championship title and he is off at a price o f7/4 with online betting site Bet365 for the event. Neil Robertson and Judd Trump are back at a price of 6/1, Robertson looking to add to his 2010 title while Trump is still looking for his first but goes into the tournament in form after winning the China Open.

So Trump has a little bit of form going for him with that China Open win, which came after a Championship League title in March. Ronnie O’Sullivan won the Welsh Open in February while as for Neil Robertson, he has won two titles this season, the ranking UK Championship as well as the Champion of Champions tournament. They are the heavyweights, while Shaun Murphy will be a dangerous floater in the field at 12/1 while Ding Junhui is talking a big game who had to come through qualifiers (and do so in fantastic form) to get back to the Crucible.

Snooker World Championship 2016 Draw

The qualifiers took place from April 6th through 13th and Ding Junhui was the highest profile player through there. He dropped only seven games in his three qualifying rounds to make it back to the Crucible after dropping down the world rankings to have to go through qualifying to get back to the Crucible. What makes things interesting about Ding is that he will be eligible to face any of the top sixteen players in the first round and no-one will be wanting that. Shaun Murphy was the last winner of the Snooker World Championship as a qualifier.

The 32 players (the top sixteen in the world automatically qualify) will be joined by the sixteen qualifiers who have made it to the crucible. The top seed is reigning champion Stuart Bingham after his victory last season. The first round of the Snooker World Championship 2016 is over 19 frames while the second round and the quarter finals are both over the best of 25 frames. The semi finals go over the best of 33 frames and the final goes a little longer being the best of 35 frames. The final of the Snooker World Championship 2016 will be played over May 1st and 2nd.

Snooker World Championship History and Stats

This is the 40th season that the Snooker World Championship will be held at the Crucible so there is a long history between the event and the Sheffield arena. The most number of titles won at the world Championship has long been held by the great Joe Davis who claimed 15 titles in his career (all consecutive too!). None of the modern day greats can even get close to that with the retired Stephen Hendry at seven titles though his illustrious career including a five-year winning streak at the Crucible. Along with Joe Davis, the only ones ahead of Hendry’s tally of World Titles are Fred Davis and John Pulman with 8 each.

Ronnie O’Sullivan is on five titles and recently Stuart Bingham said that while O’Sullivan is the best player in the game at the moment, he’s not the greatest, that honour falling to Hendy because of his number of titles. Ronnie O’Sullivan has been in three of the last four finals, winning two of them. England have produced the highest amount of World Champions as well as the highest tally of titles. There have been twelve English winners of the World Championship Snooker, combining for a total of 51 titles.

Snooker World Championship 2016 Prediction

The draw makes things a little interesting here because you have Neil Robertson and Judd Trump together in the second quarter. So one of the big guns will be missing out on the semi finals. So that makes things a little unpredictable in backing either of them because of a huge hurdle that they could both face, as they would be on course for a quarter final clash.

There’s a similar story in the third quarter with Shaun Murphy and Ronnie O’Sullivan set for a quarter final showdown, although The Rocket would be heavy favourite to win that matchup. So down in the bottom quarter of the draw is where we are going to find our prediction for the Snooker World Championship 2016 and that is Mark Selby. The 2014 champion has a quarter that he could navigate his way through pretty comfortably. That would put him on course for a semi final against the winner of O’Sullivan’s quarter but Selby took O’Sullivan down at the Circle in the 2014 final and that may be a guide.
